Dinnerware and glassware question

Is anyone else considering buying plates and glassware instead of renting or using disposable?

I'm trying to be wise about where I spend money but I'm worried that having beautiful tables and centerpieces will look odd paired with plastic dinnerware? I do like the idea of easier cleanup though by throwing it all away. : / I wasn't worried until a few people said disposable was unacceptable.

What does everyone think?

My venue provides that. But when I was looking at different venues plasticware was something I didn't want.

That being said, I think its a matter of preference. If you have to clean it yourself I would definitely go plastic. I wouldn't say that "disposable is unacceptable". I also wouldn't go buy a bunch of plates and glasses just for your wedding...unless you plan to use it after, otherwise it's just clutter/waste (IMO).

Looking back at my contract, I actually got the plates/silverware/glasses through my caterer. (Technically, they rented them from Taylor's Rentals in Fort Worth). It looks like it came out to about $5.50 per person for all the different sizes of plates and glasses and all that, which I don't think was too bad. These were non-disposable; I'm sure some catering companies use disposable if that works better for your budget.

So, you might wait and check with the caterer you end up choosing -- they might be able to recommend the best mix of plates/utensils/cups/etc for what you're serving, and it might work out to be pretty reasonable in price. And since they take care of all the plates and things, you don't have to worry about the cleanup.

Personally, I didn't want anything leftover from the wedding besides the pictures and my dress. We only have one small box of leftover things (vases) and it drives me crazy to see it every day. I can't imagine if we'd gotten all those extra plates/glasses and been stuck with them afterward!

My caterer provides disposable plates and silverware but it's black... Which I don't like at all.

I personally do not like plasticware for something formal, it just makes it look cheapened, IMO.
I'm planning on buying all of the glassware and silverware from Ikea for our wedding, and hopefully sell it all to another bride afterwards. It ends up being about the same as renting everything. My mom has been buying various dinner plates from Salvation Army/Goodwill the past year for the mismatched vintage look. I'm hoping to sell those too since a lot of people like the look but don't have the time to collect them all.

I guess it would depend on the tone of your reception, but I think the plastic stuff would definitely take the look down a few pegs.  Although to be honest, I've been to several weddings where wine and other drinks were served in those basic plastic clear cups, and I think I side-eyed it once, but it really didn't make any difference.  It probably was super easy to clean up and it did serve to avoid any broken glass if someone dropped something.  I would say if you're going to go for plasticware, go with the cups but not anything else... maybe the cake forks, but I can't imagine just going with a few things would end up saving you that much money in the long run.

I used clear plastic disposable plates, cups and forks for our Sunday afternoon reception. We had a buffet and since it was in the afternoon the overall feel was less formal to start with. I really wanted to rent plates or buy them but it was going to cost at least $750 for the rental and that was not worth the cost to me. Although if my wedding was more formal I would have paid the rental fee.
