Wedding Woes

s/o kids in church

I took 6let a couple of weeks ago.  Right after final prayers, but before the song started, in the midst of complete silence, he busts out with a plain as day "Bye Bye."  Then he bolts BOLTS out the back door.  The whole church lost it.

That is adorable. When I used to go to church I actively sought out adorable children to sit near, because I knew they'd keep me entertained for the hour.

My favorite was Icky Face Girl. If you smiled at her, she'd snarl at you. But if you snarled back she'd giggle and giggle. She also did the bye bye trick a few times.

Kids in church can be cute. Nephew is a huge PITA. At our church there's this on kid who can be heard over everyone during the response to the Prayers of the Faithful. "Lowd heaw our pwayews"

I know there are people that won't take their kids to church because they are worried that something like this will happen and everyone will hate them for it.  But I've been in enough churches to know that most people are just happy you are there and don't care if your kids make noise as long as you aren't letting them play with a noisy truck all through the sermon.

(not a parent disclaimer)  It seems like it should be important to teach kids how to deal with a quiet place with other people.  I know they aren't going to sit like angels and listen to what is going on, but if I had kids I would want to teach them the ritual of sitting and being respectful of what is going on even if that means kneeling on the floor and coloring for most of the service.

    zsa, yes.

at my home church, there is a kid whose parents had to be called to the daycare/nursery every week because their kid will not stop screaming and crying.  the head of the nursery?  the kid's uncle.

uncle's house?  kid's okay.  uncle in nursery?  MONSTER WHO IS TRYING TO KILL EVERYONE AND EAT THEM AND THEN KILL PUPPIES.

One of the things that turned me off to religion was the way the pastor of my old church treated children. There was no children's room, and they only did a children's sermon at one of the Sunday masses. Kids get bored in church, it's pretty much a given. But if a child ever made so much as a peep during mass, our pastor would stop what he was doing, turn to the parents, and ask them to deal with the situation.

He also announced that Santa Claus wasn't real at the children's Christmas mass.

We had another priest, whom I loved, that gave a sermon once about how hearing children in church was one of the highlights of his job. He tied it into how Jesus taught that adults should be more like children, etc.

    TD, that is horrible.

My grandfather was a minister.  He was far from the most patient man, but he always told parents not to take their kids out of church because they were crying because it just meant that he should talk louder.

You should have told that to the pastor.

First time we went 6let had a major melt down.  I apologized and the priest said it was okay, he just talks louder.  I have quiet toys- slinky, blocks, books, and we generally do okay.  I sit on the end just in case though.
