When you run outside, how do you know how far you've gone? Do you drive the route in your car to see the distance? Do you not care how far, and just run until you're tired?
I have the Nike Plus Sportband. It's essentially a sports watch. You have to do one mile on a track to calibrate it, but after that, it tracks your time, distance, and calories. You then pop it into the computer (it is a USB drive), and it tracks your progress.

my 2012 shelf:
When I can't steal FI's iphone, I usually run until I'm tired and then come home and note the time it took and map it out on mapmyrun.com.

Sometimes I map out my route first on RunKeeper.
Other times, I use the RunKeeper app on my iPhone which tells me how far I've run.
I just use google maps to figure it out.
