Birth control does happen to fail in certain circumstances. It has nothing to do with being stupid. Accidents happen. It takes a lot more courage than you think to get an abortion. It's not the easy way out as you may seem to think. I just think it was wrong for you to generalize like that, I agree with focusing on prevention and showing the real repercussions of dealing with babies/getting an abortion. Nothing will change if everything is glamorized like it is now.

I thought my disclaimer covered that, but I really do appologize for the confusion. I meant that in reference only to making a show that de-glamorizes teen pregnancy. On 16 & pregnant, nearly every single one of them claims they weren't using any form of birth control when they got pregnant and then were surprised when the wound up pregnant. It's just a statement that shows the extreme differences I think you would need to really get it into some teens' heads that getting pregnant that young isnt' something to strive for.

I don't think anyone on here was belittling abortion. They were just saying that this girl might get a lot more backlash than she anticipates. Additionally, no one on here is saying that an abortion is wrong, just that they have moral issues with it being presented in this way on TV.

I agree with you that smart and/or adult women get pregnant unintentionally as well as stupid and/or young women. I know plenty of smart adults AND smart young women who got pregnant by accident. The problem occurs when it ends up TV in a way that doesn't portray the emotional/financial/physical hardships that go along with having a child, especially when you are very young. Then it becomes a pattern where these young women get pregnant accidentally again and again.

[QUOTE]I don't think there's enough information yet. I do remember years ago, during one of the first few seasons of Real World, they showed one of the roommates going to get one. It certainly wasn't glamorized. I was kind of in disbelief that the girl put it out there for all to see (and that her mom took her). And then a year or two later, she was married to an NBA star. Hmm, wonder when that ended in divorce.

If you are talking about Tami, they had 2 children and divorced. I know this because I saw it on Basketball Wives. Yes, I know it's terrible I watch these reality shows.

  • Jemmini: It was just the ''I wasn't stupid'' part that irked me a little but thanks for the clear-up! Wink

Garcias: I didn't say anyone was belittling abortion. I said it's wrong to say everyone who gets pregnant young is stupid. And yes COMPLETELY agree that glamorizing abortion on TV is ridiculous. I don't get it either. But we'll never see the end of stupid shows on TV.....

oooo Tammy I remember her from Real World, never watched Basketball Wives. I loed that story line because it showed the hard facts, that no one WANTS to have an abortion but it's what's necessary sometimes. Her mother went with her becuase they were close and they talked about how abortion had been illegal when her mom was pregnant with her but if it hadn't been she probably would have aborted her.

I heard on the radio today that the teen pregnancy rate is actually down for the first time in 70 years or something. Funny enough, this is the number one link when I googled it, http://www.ontheredcarpet.com/16-and-Pregnant-gets-some-credit-for-drop-in-U-S--teen-pregnancy/7858822
