Platinum vs White Gold (Engagement Rings)

I have been reading that platinum rings withstand more, are shinier, last forever, etc.. but platinum rings can also be about $1000 extra for the exact same ring in white gold.

Is it worth it to you to shell out the extra dough for the platinum, or are you just sticking with white gold (14 kt or 18kt)?

    I like palladium.

Palladium seems to be like a great option! You ladies are so helpful. I had no idea that palladium was an option, but seeing that it is in the platinum family and is more cost effective than actual platinum, I am very excited to have asked.

My boyfriend honestly knows much more about rings than I do, and since we will start shopping for rings soon I did not want to be absolutely clueless walking into every jewlery store. lol

Any other helpful tips about engagement rings?

Its hard looking online, because I honestly don't know which ring styles I will like on. Sure, it looks great on the screen, but seeing the shapes/styles on my actual finger will be a whole different story I feel like. Hopefully I end up liking a lot of things, like you did. That would be great!

That's another good point. I'm not super picky when it comes to color/clarity, unless of course its completely discolored or something extreme. And knowing that round diamonds are more expensive just gives me something else to steer from.

I do want a beautiful ring, but I am not one to break the bank for anything. I'm trying to figure out as much as I can before my boyfriend spends an exhorbatant amount of money for extras, like platinum instead of finding out simple things like palladium exists.

Thank you so much for all the ring info!

[QUOTE]Other hints? I did a lot of online looking, but when I tried on things in the store, I had a completely different opinion about the rings. I thought I had been really picky in the past, and it turns out, I was pretty happy with the way most things looked on my hand. We did end up picking out settings online, which isn't the best case scenario, but I don't think either of us wanted to try to go to the store to figure it all out. (I was okay with choosing it from a website because I liked so many of the settings I tried on. BF made the final decision on the exact setting.) It would be a good idea to know what IS important to you though - size vs. color vs. clarity for example. BF knows I preferred something slightly larger with less than perfect color and clarity grades. Other women prefer perfect color and don't care about the size. If you prefer a non-diamond center stone, you should let BF know. Oh also - round diamonds are more expensive than all the other kind. When we found that out, we looked at other shapes. BF picked an oval diamond. My other requirement was that it (the diamond) didn't stick up too far out of the setting. This is something that BF has heavily hinted might be an issue with the setting he picked out. If it's really an issue, I won't feel bad suggesting we pick another setting. I know it seems incredibly b*tchy of me to say that, but I work in a lab and wear gloves all day, so I worry about ripping gloves/damaging the ring.

Did you go for a true oval (based on ratio) or a variation? When I worked in a jewelry store we didn't have very many settings with ovals, but whenever we got loose diamonds in for a client I really liked them. I always seemed to prefer the 'fatter' ovals over the 'skinnier' ones, but I rarely saw them set.

I could be wrong, but I swear I heard that the price of gold is actually more expensive or almost as expensive as platinum now.

One thing to consider is that white gold turns yellow and you have to have it re-dipped. For most people it isn't a big deal, but it depends on your preferences.

I'm learning so much about diamonds/rings from your conversations! haha

I can't believe I forgot to introduce myself. My boyfriend, Steve, and I have been together over a year. He has been looking at rings online for the past 9 months, so he has a bit of an advantage over my lack of ring knowledge. lol But we are both finishing up our degrees, about a year and a half left, and then planning on getting married after graduation in the summer or fall of 2013.

Steve would have proposed month 3 if I would have let him, but we are getting finances and education out of the way first. We were together 24/7 for a year before he transferred schools, so we are currently long distance and very anxious to be back together. He's my best friend, my workout partner, the one that makes me chocolate chip cookies when I crave them at midnight, the one I pray with, the person I can talk about anything with and will always support me (even if its getting a degree that makes him wait a few years longer than he wants to get married lol) and the man I want to spend the rest of my life with.

I am so happy to have found him and to have found this website! I am excited for him to come and visit in another month so we can start looking at rings for the first time together.

your relationship sounds very similar to mine. we've been together for (almost) a year *officially* (long story if you wanna know lol) but LDR for the past 3 months, with 3 more months to go. I finish my undergrad in December and he's currently in grad school so we're not thinking of marriage for the next 2-3 years, since we're both SUPER BROKE. lol

your picture is super cute :) good luck looking for rings!
