Bridesmaid dress questions

Obviously I need to talk to the bridal store where I find any dress, and seeing the dresses in person will help, but wanted to ask if anyone's been in this situation. I have 5 BMs, 3 who are pettite and thin, one who is a size 12 and the 5th is a plus size. The only feedback I have gotten in choosing a dress has been chest support (meaning not strapless and preferably dresses that won't require strapless bras or be too revealing) and would be nice if not floor length. Both are things I was already thinking anyway. All 5 are very agreeable and supportive of my choices,  but I want to be sure whatever I choose they are 100% comfortable with. We already discussed prices (prefer to stay under $200).

Here are three dresses I like with my questions:

Has anyone chosen dresses to be hemmed several inches and the dress still work?

Two of my grls suggested this one, but I wonder if the top would work for those with large chests and if chiffon is an OK fabric for the plus size.

This one would I'd really love if only 4-6" longer. Anyone have suggestions where to find something like this-love the v-neck and wide shoulder straps.

This is similar to the dress I'll wear:

And guys will wear gray tuxes, to be ordered once we settle on BM dresses.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Bridesmaid dress questions

  • By chest support do they mean no strapless bras? If that's the case, that second would be difficult. Now if the dress has builting bras and stuff, that's a whole other thing. For number 1, I don't know for sure but I bet you can hem it quite a bit, I'm short and for every formal dress I've ever had, I've had to hem about 7" and it's never been insanely difficult. It's the kind of dress I would choose if I was choosing a single dress though.

Are you sticking with chiffon/organza/jersey type fabrics, or are you willing to do satin or other kinds? There might be more options if you open up your type of fabric, I saw one on the pretty maids that was in satin  that had the tank straps (what's weird is that when I looked at PM a few months ago, all of their dresses came in ALL of the fabrics).

  • I really like the first one.  I think it would be really pretty with your dress and probably work with all the body types quite well.

  • My pick is the first one.  WIth an A-line dress you can easily shorten it and it will not look weird at all.  It seems that you want more of a tea-length dress for your BMs anyway so I really don't think it would be an issue.

As for the chiffon, as long as a dress is sized and altered correctly, any person of any size or shape should look nice in it.

  • Thanks ladies!!! I really do like #1 as long as it can be hemmed to tea length. I know when I've been a BM, we had to alter my dresses but never severl inches so wasn't sure how it would work.

I do like chiffon type fabric, like how it tends to be sweepy. Satin is not off the list and I know quite popular. I figure I'd narrow down to a couple of dresses then seeing them in person will help me decide on fabric. I just feel the satin dresses I have had have been too shiny and stiff.
