Re: Starting Detox/Clense

  • ewww why would anyone want to look like Gwenyth Paltrow? Good luck...
    :3
  • Haha im doing this one because you can actually eat solid foods in a lot its just liquids ugh! i couldnt stand that i love food to much hahaha
  • I don't get cleanses.  If you eat clean, green, and lean, it's the same effect.  Why do people want to do these temporary things (the OP's doesn't sound as bad as some) when a permanent healthy diet change will benefit long-term?

    i'm genuinely curious.
  • I have been slowly trying to eat better and cleaner and more organic, but I havent always, Im still sometimes a really bad eater lol, so I'm hoping this will just kick start that, I've been having issues with sinuses and just feeling lowsy and my face has been breaking out so Im hoping this will just do a full body clense and help with a health boost
  • Gwenyth Paltrow's blog Goop is complete crap - you know that right?  It's been the subject of a lot of criticism.  Just because she's a "celebrity" doesn't mean that she knows anything about anything.

    I personally wouldn't do it.
  • I didn't know that at all, I dont even remember how I came upon it actually.
Ive read reviews of people who have done the cleanse and said it was hard but after the 7 days their skin looked better and they felt better.
I was just hoping for the same thing lol, I know it will be a hard 7 days but it be nice to give my system a reboot
  • i found the following articles about the Paltrow's cleanses quite informative:

    http://www.health.com/health/article/0,,20412004,00.html

    http://www.livestrong.com/article/288675-the-master-cleanse-weight-loss/

After reading these and more, I personally am now disgusted by Gwyneth Paltrow.  Anyone who implied that laxative use is good for weight loss, is an idiot and encouraging unsafe behaviors.
  • the one in the artical is 21 days long it seems, this is only 7 days but they do seem similar in what you can and cannot eat. I honestly dont want to lose any weight, I was just told that doing a clense cleans out your system and helps kinda reboot it, Im not an expert so I honestly have no idea, I did reserch it and found some people liked it and it helped clear up their skin and some people couldnt do it and never finished.
Gwyneth Paltrow as a person I have no opinion I'm not a fan of hers or anything so I honestly dont want to be like her or anything lol. Trust me Im not doing this to lose weight in any means I believe in exersice and eating right.
  • I agree with PP--I don't think this is a good idea. Here's an article I've had bookmarked for a while.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1367879/Gwyneth-Paltrows-personal-trainer-Tracy-Andersons-diet-plan-gave-blackouts.html

Just in case you don't feel like reading the whole article, I can sum it up for you. This woman decided to try the metamorphisis plan. She did lose some weight (partly because the diet has you on about 700 calories per day), and she was happy about that. However, she says this about the side effects:

"On the downside I feel woozy and find it difficult to concentrate. At first I had loads of energy but now I'm always tired and am told I'm horribly grouchy to boot. My skin is terrible and my nails are flaking and weak. And  -  how can I put this  -  my system has become, shall we say, somewhat sluggish. Normally I'm as regular as clockwork. Not any more."

  • do you think this could actually make my skin worse then???
i thought detox cleanse were ok since like everyone has them out
even Jilian Micheals i just thought they were safe if they were natural

I guess what people are trying to say is that this program does not count as "eating right."
  • I dont believe in a diet of like 700 calories long term I would never do that honestly, I do the metamorhphosis workout but eat what I want (besides this cleanse of course) haah I do enjoy her workout mainly because I see results, but I would never do her diet plan. (tracy anderson that is)
  • I see I understand, but is there a healthy way to cleanse your system? I've heard that toxins and etc build up from everday life and that sometimes its good to cleanse i know we get rid of toxins in our skin through sweat sometimes

Yes, I think it could make your skin worse, those obviously I don't know for sure. Everyone's body is different.

Still, lack of proper nutrition for any extended period of time is not good for you. It doesn't make sense to me: why would my body work better when I am treating it worse?

Your body is actually really good at getting rid of everyday "toxins." That's one of the reasons you have a liver. Our bodies are remarkable efficient at processing things.

If you are really concerned with toxins, just try avoiding them in the first place! Don't eat crap--eat a well-balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, high-quality proteins, whole grains, and good fats (like nuts and avocados). If you don't put bad stuff into your body, you don't have to worry about getting it out of your body.
  • I honestly have just been having so much trouble with my skin lately and someone told me that doing a detox would help, thats what started my search in the begininng, I thank you ladies for all your information its been rreally helpful, I think waht Im going to do is follow her recipies (since i bought all the groceries already) lol but incorporate my own foods in it also so I'm reciving more nutrients but it will be no processed foods only natural more fruits and veggies! does that sound healthier?
or am i still way off
  • I agree with the other ladies here.

Can I ask about your skin troubles, what you've tried, and what you're currently doing?

Honestly that sounds way better. Eat enough, but eat "clean." If you need to track your nutrients, I think you can do that on a site like Livestrong on Sparkpeople. Also, if you suspect that a food sensitivity is causing your skin problems, pay attention to your diet and how it relates to your skin--for example, maybe your skin always gets worse a day or two after you eat a particular food.

I'd also suggest talking to a doctor or a licensed dietician/nutritionist. They might be able to help you with the skin-nutrition connection better than we can.

Take care of yourself and good luck with everything.
  • I have never really had skin trouble until about a year ago, i get all these tiny bumps on my forehead and temples, and my cheeks and chin will break out randomly with red pimples, like 2 to 4 at a time.  i've tried natural remedies like oatlmeal scrubs Ive tried fash washes so far I've tried cetaphil, one out but loreal with the little scrubber, and now I'm trying arbonne.
  • Thanks so much again :) i appreciate all the advice!
I'll keep track and see if it is maybe a food tolerance I didnt even think of that.
    Thanks so much :D

Drink lots of water and think about seeing a dermatologist. Or you can see if monthly facials work!
  • I think there's so much bad press out there about fasting and detox diets because of course it's not meant to be long term, and when some company is selling something that promises unbelievable results for a lot of money it is suspect. Fasting or doing some sort of extreme diet (like raw foods or vegan) for 7 days, however, is not that big of a deal. Lots of different religions and cultures advocate fasting in certain circumstances, and as long as you are drinking enough water it isn't generally considered dangerous (if you don't have any underlying health conditions, etc.). It might not help, but if you think it seems reasonable and want to try it for a week . . . I could never do it, even for 7 days, but - good luck!
  • I have really sensitive skin too!  I find two things give my skins problems.  When I PMS I break out, every month like clockwork for a week.  If this is the case for you, I recommend taking an Evening Primrose Oil pill.  It's a good omega fatty acid and it helps my headaches and breakout from PMS.  The other thing that destroys my skin is just nasty food!  I've stopped eating chips, fries, pizza, all that crap.  I make ALL my food from scratch (with maybe one break a week using a powdered sauce, or taco shells, ect).  The few days after I eat something like that, bam, breakout.  I'd say the best detox for your skin would be to make and eat everything from scratch for a few weeks.  Nothing from a box or frozen or packaged.  Try it out!
