Wedding Party

"Yeah, but you get your bridesmaids to do that stuff"

My students are stuffing envelopes right now for our annual banquet.  One girl said "wow, this sucks.  I will hate when I have to do this when I get married." and another said "Yeah but you get your bridesmaides to do that stuff".

Apparently in the wedding lessons I teach, I need to add in something about "jobs".

  • It's is plant science, animal science, ag mechanics, ag business, leadership- lots of good stuff!  I love it.

I get really mad when people say "those who can't do, teach."  I would like to see someone who says that try to teach!  7th & 8th graders in love, dealing with eating disorders, friends fighting/making up/fighting, parents barking for the sake of barking, statutory rape, yeah the list goes on and on.  But, it is incredibly rewarding when they learn and do and love!

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: "Yeah, but you get your bridesmaids to do that stuff" : Larissa, I am sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but your marriage is not valid.  And even though you fed and entertained your guests for a night, you are incredibly rude for not showing them your gratitude and appreciation with a simple $1 token.  :)

Very true, I learned this in college with some professors.  I felt like they couldn't survive in industry and decided to come to college to make more $ and get the perks.

  • Or the ones who are great in the industry so they think they should teach it but they suck at teaching.  My high school chem teacher was like that.  Brilliant, I think, but couldn't teach at all.
  • People keep asking me how the wedding plans are coming along, and I simply answer "Busy and stressful". So then they ask why and what I'm working on so I tell them about my DIY projects and assembling the invites and everyone responds with, "Have your bridesmaids do that stuff for you!" For the record, I haven't asked my BM's to do anything yet except order their dresses! And I don't plan on asking anything else of them.. even my MOH.. she's busy enough helping my mom with the shower and planning the b-party. I would never dream to ask anything else of her.
  • Chemistry is exactly what I was thinking. I SUCK at chemistry, took it 4 times in college.  Yeah, I'm a dummy :)

[QUOTE]I think that needs to be taught to girls when they get their periods.  It can be an all in one class: -You need these supplies -And you need to be a functioning adult so learn to do stuff yourself.

Ditto...but you know the parents in America just let their kids do whatever now days. Teaching them to be responsible, kind, humans who can do things for themselves would be child abuse. Making a child do things on his/her own...ha :)

Suz, you are totally right!  Some parents are awful.  I have parents who are in my age bracket and many of them are unfit. Their kids run all around and do as they please and some even tell the parents what to do- and the parents put up with it! Then they let their kids dress like idiots.

  • I have one bridesmaid who is extremely talented with scrapbooking who volunteered to make our invites, and i did take her up on that offer, but she works in a position where she needs busy work a lot of the time, and it is something she truly enjoys...I will probably get her an extra nice bm gift too, as far as asking them to do things I only do it if I think they'd enjoy it...we're all crafty so we are probably having a crafty night at my house, with movies and wine while we work...but I dont' expect them to go way out of their way either!

LOL, I took it in high school & then in college because I started as a bio major.  Yeah, chem is why I'm a lawyer.
  • I wouldn't ask my BM to do anything I wouldn't do myself...if I'm asking any of them (note: ASKING, not demanding), you'd better bet I'm sitting there with them.  I am doing my own cake, with a couple of my friends...I'll actually be doing A LOT of DIY for this wedding for both money reasons and because I want it to be more personal...not to mention it's really hard to find most of what we want in our colors...

Bottom line: Don't have your BM doing anything you wouldn't do yourself.
  • When I was my sister's MOH I put together about 150 favors for her, thankfully this only included tying a cookie cutter to a folded card with some ribbon, my sister is just awesome like that. (They were "cut out for each other" OH-HO-HO!)

    They're bridesmaids, not wedding slaves.

    Ha! that almost rhymed.
