Groom's Cake Advice?

I'd like to do a surprise cake for my groom, and I was just wondering what the typical price would be for a fairly simple cake?

I've only got one quote so far, from the bakery that's doing our official wedding cake, and I was just really surprised because the price seemed high to me - almost $500.  Is that normal?

Also do people usually have a much smaller groom's cake than wedding cake? I asked for the same number of servings.

Thanks in advance!

My groom's cake only ran $150.  It wasn't too complicated though, just a single tier of red velvet cake in the shape of a track (he was a sprinter in college).
It only served 75 while our wedding cake served 215.  I would think you wouldn't need the same number of servings because chances are people will choose one or the other.
    Hope that helps!

I think most of the time the groom's cake is smaller.  I've seen it looking like a crawfish pot a couple of times and that was cute.  But if your guy's into football, or hunting, or whatever...I think it is nice to reflect one of his interests so I'm sure you'll have ideas!
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.

Usually the Groom's cake runs about the same or even more than the wedding cake depending on how detailed you want it.  I only paid around $180 for mine but I didn't use the same bakery as my wedding cake b/c it would have been more.

Thanks ladies!  I am going to get a couple of quotes from some other bakeries.  The cake I want is not very detailed (a beach scene) so I don't think it should be super expensive.

Don't know if you're interested in a tiered king cake...but Haydel's does one for about 1/2 - 1/3 of the cost of a regular groom's cake.
