How far out from your wedding day did you register?

We registered about 4 months before.  I think anytime after 6 months is fine though.

Hmm... I think we registered in April - and I'm getting married in October.  I actually rushed to register, because I wanted to register before I sent out save the dates, because the save the dates had our wedding website url on it.  I thought people would get their STDs and then look at our website and think we weren't registered anywhere.

HAHAHHAHAH - I realize now - NO ONE even looked at our wedding website (until I stopped answering questions and referred them to our website).

We registered about 3 months prior. I don't forsee anyone buying gifts any sooner than that, unless you're having a shower 3 months before your wedding.

Also - I wanted to add - SIX MONTHS TO GO!!!! :)

We waited until after Christmas to register (for May wedding) because lots of brides warned me that almost everything will be discontinued after Christmas.

Well... that happened anyway even though we waited until late January and we constantly had to update.   Even still, I had a ton of people still telling me our stuff was discontinued even though I stayed on top of it.

For that reason alone, I wouldn't do it too far in advance...maybe 4-5 weeks before your shower invitations will go out.

EDIT:  OR better yet, go ahead and pick out your appliances and kitchen-y stuff that never really goes away...but don't pick out linens/dishes/towels/etc until 4-5 weeks before.

I think I registered about 4 months from wedding/2 months from shower.  But people started asking me at 6 months as soon as the STD's went out.  I think you can do it anytime.

I actually started on register a few months ago and we have 8 months left, but it's only because I was entering that Crate and Barrel contest and it's still there... I think most of the stuff I registered for was everyday Crate and Barrel stuff.  I probably won't check back until March to make sure things weren't discontinued...

Thanks for the advice though!  I would have never known.

We registered in July for our October wedding. My shower was in mid-September and the first item wasn't purchased from the registry until late August. We sent invites mid-August and did not send STDs.

Nothing was purchased from our registry until right before my first shower.  I know because I stalked it regularly - up until two weeks before my first shower.  Then FI told me I couldn't stalk it anymore, because that was not fair to our guests.  I said - Whatever Emily Post!  But, I stopped.  Mean FI.  :)

I registered a few weeks ago and we are June 2011.

I pretty much have to redo all of them though. Since we both are starting out we really just need the basics. (dishes, cookware and flatware)

I wanted to have FI feel included by helping me out and that was a DISASTER!

I will forever have the memory of when I gave FI the scanning gun because I needed to go to the bathroom. When I came back FI was staring intently at two panini makers for a good 5 minutes. Scanned one and moved onto wok pans.

    LOL!

He enjoyed it, but I would rather have dishes than a panini maker.

BB&B is brutal when you register. I felt like I couldn't say no to the SA. When I came home I took about 80% of what she scanned off.

We did it about 6 months before also.  Our wedding is here in October.  The same day as Serlace!

I registered late April for an August wedding.  The dishes, appliances, etc were fine, but any decorative items: vases, placemats, napkins, etc all got discontinued.  Keep an eye on that if you register for those things.  Also, since I spent 3 hours at Dillards trying to return items and finish out our registry, I'll let you know what I thought about the stores:

Dillards, good selection, good prices, but their inventory system and website is archaic.  IT was a pain navigating through the online registry, and you can not use it to finish out your registry.  In adddition, they did not have some things, so they ordered them.  The items will be shipped to my house, but they can not take the discount.  So I have to bring it back to the store to returna nd purchase to get my 10%.  It was a PITA.

Macy's: good selection. Prices are higher than dillards (but they have lots of sales/coupons for savy shoppers).  Their website was easy to use, and the sales associates were always helpful.  However, all the bedding that I had chosen in the store showed discontinued w/in a month of selecting.  So I chose new stuff.  When I went into the store (6 months later!) they still had it on display.  I was quite PO'd.  Someone had purchased the new shams and had them monogrammed.  Very nice, but I liked the first set better, and didn't want to change since we couldn't return everything and it didn't match.

Crate&Barrel, this is my absolute favorite store.  Their website was so easy, and had a lot of great features.  The store was always easy to work with.  Love them.  However, they change out their seasonal items quickly (which seems like half the store)!  So don't be suprised if it gets discontinued while on your registry.

We have registered at BB&B already, and we are 9 months out. Unlike MLandCJ, registering there was a breeze...I got the registry going online before we went in, we went to the store, handed over the gun and set us loose.
SInce this was a relatively easy task, we wanted to get it over with...it's just one less thing to worry about as the time nears. We will be registering @ Macys in the next month or so for things that we didn't find/want from BBB, but anything that we could control taking care of quickly, we wanted to do sooner than later :) Easy Check!

has anyone who has already registered have any problems with macy's? this is the main place FI and I were going to register and I read a thread last night about how horrible they are in terms of updating the lists and things being discontinued. it has me really worried!

Carmen - We did a Macy's registry and it was a heck of a lot easier to manage than our BB&B registry.  The only thing I remember being discontinued was our dishes from the stores, but they were still available online and someone bought them for us there.

Our guests complained the most about BB&B.  I maintained the registry online and it showed everything in stock, but it seems like the individual stores were discontinued/sold out of almost everything.

We did BB&B about 9 months out.  DH was bored and looking for something to do and suggested registering so we did it early.

Yours says 1 month, 1 week, 4 days.  Maybe it's just the knot.  It's been weird for me lately.  Things are coming along - just really stressed out right now.

I just wanted to add that Crate & Barrel is an awesome place to register (but you do have to be careful with things getting discontinued). They discontinued our dishes after we had already gotten 2 sets (and taken the tags off), but took the sets back anyway and let us pick out a new set. It was kind of a hastle, but they were really nice and helpful about it. They also give you free toasting glasses just for registering.

BBB is the best I think if you are looking for things to stay on your registry and not get discontinued. Target is by FAR the worst. We registered there in early August for our November wedding and atleast 1/3 of our stuff isn't carried there anymore. I'm not even telling people we registered there- it seems like a waste!

I registered early, but that's because of our schedules and the Formal Engagement with Bridal Shower after. We are 8 1/2 months out and people have already bought things off the registry.
