Engagement Ring Woes

So, I feel terrible!  About a month ago I woke up in the morning, looked down and one of the diamonds was missing from my ring!!  My heart sunk!  Now, to add fuel to the fire, we had literally just gotten the ring back from the jeweler three days before because the white gold kept turning yellow...we had to have it re-dipped 3 times in 7 months.  The jeweler did say that was rare but gave some stupid excuse.  So not only were we already upset about that, then the diamond comes out!  We couldn't find it and my FH was livid!  He went to the jewelry store that morning and finally the jeweler admitted that my ring wasn't designed for such small fingers (I have a 4.25). They said because of the channel set and the way it had to be molded to become such a small size, it compromised the structure of the ring.  So finally, they said that it would be best if my FH chose a different ring that could be made to fit me...so he picked one, and it is being made.  They said originally it would take about 4 weeks or so to get back.  A week later the jeweler called my FH and apologized but he was wrong with the time...it wouldn't be ready until at least June 30!  At this point I had already been without my ring for 2 weeks plus a whole week before that to get it re-dipped.  Lots of words were had, and they did put a rush on it but still, 5 weeks later, no new ring.  They did give me a new one of my original ring as a loaner but its not the same!   oh, and we had already bought our wedding bands, and now the my band no longer matches the new ring, so I have to find another one!  My FH is so upset.  He feels like he failed me...I just feel so terrible.  I guess on the upside, I did get an upgrade in the diamonds!  :)  Anyway, that's my vent. I just feel so terrible.

Re: Engagement Ring Woes

  • What a bunch of crap!  I would have asked for the money back from the jewelers!

My BFF's former engagement ring was from Jared's and her diamond fell out twice!  And they just kept giving excuse after excuse as to why it fell out.  And she doesn't have tiny fingers like you.  I think she wears a 6.5 or 7.  Anyway, because of that and because of the runaround they gave my mom about some of her jewelry - I will never go to Jared's and I tell everyone I know about how "big business" they are.

FI got my ring at a custom jeweler that's been in our city for over 50 years.  That's where we went for our wedding bands, too.  We'll never go anywhere else.  I got one of my prongs caught on something and we went to the jeweler to have it fixed and he asked if the prong was always lifted.  He was appalled that it might have left his shop without being perfect.  And if you don't like something, he'll change it until you like it.  He sized my ring right there while we waited.  He's not a flashy place - he's a workshop where the jewelry is made.

  • That is awful!  I'm sorry you have to go through this, hopefully the new ring gets to you soon!

That is such a big load of bunk I can't even begin to describe it.

You should really demand a refund or at very least some sort of compensation for this unnecessary nightmare.

My finger is the SAME SIZE as yours and when my fiance went to order my ring - they had to custom order it so the ring could be the size I needed it to be without having to be manipulated so much to the smaller size that it would compromize the setting.  I mean, damn.  Are these people stupid?  You order the ring that size.  You don't just get a big ring and then make it the size you want and hope all goes well.

You have every right to be pissed.  Hell, I'm pissed for you!

  • Well . . not to be 'Devil's Advocate' . . but white gold is NOT naturally white, therefore the yellow in it wants to come out. It's a natural process and depending on what chemicals your body gives out, will cause the ring to turn slow or fast. I've had my E-ring for almost a year now and it gets dipped every other month or so. It's really not a huge deal (while I do understand it is an inconvinence) - - weird that it takes so long for it to get dipped though. I take mine in and it's done in like 5-10 mins- -

The store SHOULD had informed your FI about the sizing situation before letting him buy the ring, I'll give you that.  I hate when people lead you on that something will work and will be great and then poof 'oh its not made for that size '

Also. . my rings are from Jareds and we've had nothing but absolutely amazing service. Service can vary by location, as with any type of store. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with them. We love them and feel very welcomed.

And last. . .again. . NOT trying to sound snarky by any means, but it is just a ring. Its a material item. I honestly wouldn't stress too much over it. Things will take care of themselves and it sounds like you've got a great FI that gets right on the ball with fixing things. Enjoy your engagment and try not to let this incident get you down. It'll all be okay! :o)

  • I'm hoping it is but I'm thinking this place is not a repuatble business. That is a laod of bull about it's because your finger is small. Mine is smaller than yours & I've had no problems and mine had to be way sized down from a 10. And there is NO REASON why the gold should be turning yellow!!! All I wear is 14 kt jewlery because otherwise I have a reaction and I wear them 24/7 365 days a year and I have never had any of my gold turn yellow and my earrings are almost as old as me (I never take them out or switch earrings). If I were your FI I would demand a refund & go somewhere else. This ring sounds morelike one you buy at walmart for $10 or from a gumball machine. Your FI shouldn't feel bad this is the jewlers fault

  • I feel so bad for you.  I agree there should be some compensation for the problems with the ring.  I hope everyting works out in the end.

I'm in ALMOST the exact same situation as you! Except my jeweler told me it was going to cost $1,800 for me to fix my setting and upgrade to a metal that won't turn yellow! Rhodium dipping is such crap if you ask me. Businesses should have to tell you before you buy what kind of maintenance you're in for.

It's a loooong story but I basically had get it tightened twice (the first time not even 24 hours after the engagement in a foreign country) and the diamond still kept coming loose. I had it taken to three separate jewelers to have it examined and they all said the same two things: The height of each prong was unequal, meaning the ring was defective from day one and two, I'm a size 4 and they said no jeweler should ever come down any more than two sizes. If they do, it's very risky! My jeweler had it taken down from a size 8!

We tried to demand a refund but no luck. The bitchy manager said, "It's not my problem your boyfriend got you a ring you didn't want." I nearly came across the counter... I'm currently dragging their name through dirt and telling every girlfriend I know. My protective papa even threatened legal action but still no luck. I placed a complaint with my local Better Business Bureau.

We decided to go to a different custom jeweler, one we trust and know personally. We should've just went there in the beginning. Sooo my ring is now in the shop and will be for over a month. We're getting a 14K pure white gold with no rhodium plating and a new mold is being cast in my exact size.

The setting is a little warmer in color than I liked but hey, gold is naturally yellow. I had to change my perception of what I thought white gold was because I always pictured it in my head as the stuff that I now know is rhodium plated. That's not the true color of white gold.

It just sucks because I'm newly engaged and everyone asks to see it... but then it just gives me the chance to warn them about Davanna's Jewelry Boutique! Stay far far away!

  • Oh My goodness!!  Craziness!  My new ring is also being casted so none of these issues happen again!  what a pain!  My FH was very verbal and stood his ground with his argument and the store did give in.  I am aware of the risks of white gold, but we were told the same thing...to upgrade to a different metal would have been at least $2000, when he already spent a ridiculous amount on my first ring!  I couldn't ask him to do that.  But, some good news:  I found a jeweler close to our house who will do the plating, repairs, and whatever else might have to be done (let's hope nothing!) within 15 minutes. So when I get my new, gorgeous, upgraded ring, if it needs to be plated, I can just go there and not have to bring it back to the crappy original jeweler that would take my ring from me for 6 days because their repair store was separate from the actual jewelry store.  when I didn't have this "loaner" that is on my finger right now, I couldn't not wear a ring so I wore a sapphire solitaire that my parents had given to me on my 16th birthday.  It was a terrible feeling.  Although I wouldn't wish the craziness on anyone, I'm sort of happy I am not completely alone in this ridiculousness!  :)  I will post pictures of my new ring when it does eventually arrive!

I am in the same madness as well :(

My ring has a diamond that is not cut right on the band. My FI and I took it to the store and they agreed that it was not right and that they would send it back to the manufacturer to get the stone replaced. After two weeks of not hearing form them we went back in to the store to only find out that they do not deal with that manufacturer anymore and that there is nothing they can do!! They did offer for me to upgrade my band at any additional costs. We decided not to do that.

Next, I took my ring in for a cleaning and one of teh saide diamonds fell out in the cleaner machine! They fixed it and I was on my way.

Well the other day I took my ring back in to get it cleaned and they informed me that my center stone was loose! They wrote up a repair ticket and told me to come back the next day. I went in yetserday and they threw my ring back in the cleaner machine and a diamond fell out again!

the lady at the store was surprised and said "that is crazy! Those are the sturdiest set diamonds in this ring!"

So if the sturdy diamonds are falling out and the non sturdy ones are staying in what does that mean?!?!

I left the store pissed and called my FI. He said that he will take care of it now! So we are going back up to the store tonight to see what they say.

I just want my ring (not broken)!!!!
