Bridal Party Question(s)!

I have picked out dresses for my bridal party that I am in love with. Due to our budget being drastically cut thanks to a suprise medical bill, I now do not have the funds (about $20 a dress) to purchase the dresses. Is it tacky to ask the bridal party to purchase the dress for themselves?

Re: Bridal Party Question(s)!

  • Did you already tell them that you will be purchasing their dresses for them?
You're not required to purchase their dresses, though you do need to take everyone's budget into account when deciding on a dress.

  • I voted "no" because usually bridesmaids pay for their own dresses, but if you'd already told them that you'd pay for them, I think you should find a way to honor that commitment.  At $20 a dress it can't be that expensive unless you have like 13 bridesmaids or something.  Can you use a different flower combo that might be cheaper, or skip doing favors, which aren't necessary anyway or something?  If you're wedding isn't until April you've got a few months to find a way to save the $ in other wedding expenses.

    Agreed with PP.

If you already said you'd be purchasing them...it's pretty tacky.

That being said, $20 for a dress is incredibly inexpensive and a bit hard to believe. Whatever you decide to do, you should move pretty quickly as that sounds like it's a great deal.
  • As long as you haven't told the girls that you'll be paying for the dresses it's fine. But you do need to make sure that the dress you've picked is in their individual budgets.

  • I think it depends on the arrangements you already have in place with your bridesmaids.

Are they expecting you to pay for their dresses?  If so, yes, you'll need to pay for what you can afford.  Have you already told them that they'll need to pay for their dresses, whatever they turn out to be?  If you have, then I hope you found out what their budgets are and chosen a dress that's within those parameters.  If this particular dress isn't, then I think you'll need to choose another one that is.

<div>I'm pretty sure OP means that she can only afford to spend $20 per girl on the dresses, and wants them to make up the difference.</div><div>
</div><div>OP, if you already told them you would pay for their dresses, I think you need to figure something out to keep this committment.  If you haven't already offered to pay, you need to talk with each girl individually about her budget, and then work with your girls to pick out a dress that fits within ALL their budgets.</div>
  • Whether they are going to be a bridesmaid or not, they were gonna have to buy a dress for the wedding anyway... and $20 for a bridesmaid dress is a STEAL!! They are lucky!

No, they would not necessarily buy a dress anyway; I do not buy a new dress for every wedding I attend as a guest. I have dresses in my closet to wear.

  • Just explain to the girls that you had some surprise medical bills to pay. I wouldn't be angry or think you were rude. That stuff happens!
