just serve hors doeuvres?

Its not because of cost or anything, i am just having a very relaxed reception (no formal place settlings)  just people eating drinking walking around socializing , plus its outdoor and in the summer so i was thinkingmaybe just serving hors doeuvres (lots of them) and lots (i mean lots...i have a slight obsession with..)desserts so im just wondering if thats enough for people and if i should mention this to them (the weddings at 6, and im pretty sure there will be enough food to flll people up, they might just be shocked if they get here and theres no fully plated meal)

thanks

Re: just serve hors doeuvres?

  • maybe ad some stations, like pasta or carving or omelet or something? As long as you have enough food to make a dinner out of the hors doeuvres it should be fine, I would definately have tables for people to sit at if they so choose tho.
  • thanks, i'll look into that, and we do have enough place for people to sit at a table its just not formal at all :) thanks again
  • As long as you have enough food to make a meal, it doesn't matter how you serve it.  Talk to your caterer about how many pieces of each thing you'll need, and definitely look into some heavier app options that will be really filling.

These cocktail style receptions can be really awesome if done right.
  • My friend did that last summer- and it was awesome.   She let people know by word of mouth (and by the time,  Sunday afternoon).   I had to drive 6 hours home after the reception- and I never stopped to eat!   They catered the apps, and then had family bake all the goodies (except the cake).

  • I am having a cocktail reception and I'm just putting on the invitation: "Please joins us for Hors doeuvres, cocktails and cake". That way no one will be shocked about not having a sit down dinner. We are also having an evening wedding so people can eat a meal before if they would like.
  • I am also doing "stations" which is great for a casual reception. As the other girls said, make that clear on the invitation that its just cocktails and apps and don't have the party at dinner time (6pm-7pm) because people will expect to have a full meal at that time of night.
  • I definitely think that's a cute idea.  However, if it's at dinner time, just make sure there's enough food to replace a dinner.  Judging by your post, however, I'm sure you already had that in mind!

I haven't been to a wedding that serves just hor devours, however, like you, I LOVE THEM!  I would be thrilled to go to a wedding and have tons a choices of little things to eat... that sounds so much better than a boring plated meal.  This will be especially awesome if you have tons of deserts too! =)
