Child labor laws = US family farms?

Re: Child labor laws = US family farms?

  • I know I'm kinda late and I don't think anyone touched on this but how will a 90 minute class teach TRUE safety? Plus, the government tries to shove hands on experience down our throats as teachers and now they are taking it away?

  • This whole thing is ridiculous.  I live in a rural area and all the kids work on their family farms here.  They seem to love it! They are also well mannered, and hard working.  They also care about their farms.   This law would cause irreparable harm to small family farms.  It's already hard to keep small farms going. They are the backbone of small town.   I teach in a small inner city school and believe me those kids should be made to work on a farm, they might stop feeling as though they are owed everything.

Oh haha. Reading comprehension fail. Regardless though. A 90 hour class isn't teaching those kids half of what hands on experience would.

Absolutely. I find it very rare that a training is exciting. I'm an adult and have to go to training for school and hate it. I count down the minutes. I can't imagine high school kids having to do this.

  • A little irrelevant, but for some reason this makes me think of Harry Potter (blame my generation) and Umbridge, who tried to teach defense through theory.  It seems to me that the government is trying to teach safety (and possibly work ethic) through a 90-hour training course.

Seriously though, I lived out on a acreage and the family that farmed the land around us always had the kids helping.  And guess what, the kids - now adults - are still helping and (while I'm not super close with them) they are good, hard working people with their stuff together.  I used to babysit kids, and while they were a little demented, they had a work ethic on their land.  They talked about it, and they knew what they were doing.  I see no reason to shelter kids.  If their parents have worked on a farm and they have survived, then I think the children can too. A parent will be way more concerned about their child's safety than an ambigious government agency most of the time.

I really hope this doesn't pass.  I did partipcate in 4-H and even though it was only for a few years I learned a lot and it would be a terrible thing if that were to go.

  • I teach in a rural school, and one of my students just wrote his persuasive paper about this issue.  He wants to be a famer, so it's obvious what side he's on.  He did a great job, and we are working on a list of who in the government he should send it to.

  • Looks like your voices were heard.

" Update, April 26, 7:55 p.m.: Citing public outrage, the Department of Labor has withdrawn the controversial rulemaking proposal described in this article."

  • Public opinion strikes again!

Funny how every time enough people rant, people at the top have meltdown.

Though I am happy about this one.
