His Ring... Where to get it?

So, my fiance wants a silver ring. Not gold. Not white gold. Silver. :) He says he actually likes the tarnished look silver gets.
I'm not really sure where to get a silver ring that will last forever. But, another thing too, is he's an electrical engineer and so he has to take off the ring when he works on particular projects, so I'm also afraid, knowing him, he'll loose it. ;) So maybe something not extremely expensive?
Suggestions?
Thanks ladies. :)

Re: His Ring... Where to get it?

  • My fiance got a ring called Tungsten Carbide- it is the most durable jewelry metal there is- doesn't scratch or dent.  Downside- it can't be sized or engraved b/c it's so durable! He's an art teacher and a home improvement buff, so his hands are always dirty.  Suprisingly, this was a very common brand that we saw in every department store and jewelry shop we went to.  We wound up finding it at Sears for the lowest price- less than $200!  It looks just like silver, and can be as plain or ornate as he wants it- they have designs, diamonds, or just plain old bands.
  • My fiance very specifically wanted a titanium ring. I found one on Zales website for under $60, so we went ahead and got it! We even got it engraved (included in the price) with a little phrase. I'm guessing they'd sell silver bands too, but I'm not sure what the price is. It wouldn't hurt to check it out, though!
  • Both tungsten and titaniums are a good bet for your FI. Mine can't decide between them but will likely pick a tungsten. Check your local jewelers, they will all have them.
  • I agree with the PPs that if he's working with his hands a lot he may want to try tungsten. It can't be resized, but the jeweler we go to said most companies will send you two extra in your lifetime as long as you send the previous one back if your size changes. We decided not to go this route for sentimental reasons- I know that in 40 years he won't be the same size and we don't want him to have to exchange it.  He decided on white gold instead, but seems like most SO's of Knot ladies aren't as sentimental bc tungsten rings are  really popular on this site.
In terms of your original question, silver- check out your local jeweler that actually makes jewelry. A silver band would be pretty easy/inexpensive to make especially because they probably have plenty of molds to choose from.

  • You may want to also ask him if he would want to get a chain to wear his ring around his neck for when he's working on projects. My finance is going to be a large animal veterinarian so we found a really nice silver chain that has a rope design. He'll wear the ring around his neck when working with patients.

  • Have you checked out Blue Nile or iweddingband.com? Both places have a wide variety of metals to pick from and our significantly cheaper than the chain jewelery stores. HTH!
  • Funny, Kays, Weisfields and Jareds didn't have any silver bands. :P

So, I ended up getting it from a silversmith who was going out of business. :)

My finance is so funny, he didn't want tungsten either. He specifically wanted silver because of the 'cloudy look' it gets... hey, it's all right with me! xD
