dress disaster

hello all.

i was wondering if any of you know of any salons in Indiana that sell off the rack bridal gowns in plus sizes other than David's? my wedding dress was destroyed in a fire that burned down my mother's home today. it was there to keep my fiancee from seeing it. everyone made it out of the house okay, which is the most important thing, but now i have no dress and my wedding is just 2 months away. definitly not long enough to order something. also, do you know of any organizations that help brides in this situation? a second gown wasn't exactly in the budget.

Thanks for the help.

Re: dress disaster

  • wow, that's terrible.  glad to hear your family members are safe, but that is a giant bummer.  can you claim the dress on your mother's home insurance and then rush re-order the dress?
  • the insurance agent is looking into whether or not it will be covered. as for re-ordering the dress, it's not possible even rush ordered. being plus-sized, it was a hassle to begin with. now it's just a horrible mess.
  • Check on oncewed.com, and preownedweddingdresses.com,
Maybe there's someone selling a dress close to you and you could try it on.
  • You poor thing, and thank heavens your family is safe. Can you get the local TV station involved, this is definitely a human interest story for the evening news. If some publicity came your way, something would probably jump out of the woodwork.

You could phone large bridal salons in major cities in the midwest: Indianapolis, Chicago, etc. Perhaps they would have a sample dress in your size. Also, you might post this on the midwest local boards. There's a chance a recent bride who wants to sell her dress could help you out.

The insurance agent should handle your wedding dress as a special separate claim, in order to be able to cut you a check immediately. You might have to show your receipts.

Good luck. Oh, one more thing, in your predicament a dress from David's might save the day. You could phone around to check on available samples.

Oh boy!  I am so sorry to hear that.  Have no fear!!!  2 months is enough time to order a dress.  Have you looked online?

We are getting ourbridesmaid dresses here: http://www.colettejeanbridal.com/wedding_dresses_-_pg_1.  We should have them in about 4 weeks after we order them.  My Cousin got her dress on the same site and it was amazing.  They carry sizes up to 30 and they didn't charge me more for my larger gown.

Or, have you looked on Ebay?  Beware the custom made gown on there, but there may be someone selling an actual dress in your size.

    You have options!
  • try bravobride also... call around to your local salons and ask about buying sample gowns. wish I could help you locate some used dress shops but I live in texas
  • I have no clue of where in Indiana I know in the town I live in there are plenty of plus size "sample" gowns you can buy off the rack.   a road trip maybe in order.   LOL Just a thought alos is a BM dress in white that what I am doing and you can get them in very quick even in Plus size.   I am a plus bride and know how hard it is.   I am glad everyone came out okay though.   I am on the mississppi river side of Illinois

  • Have you tried Davids? I think everyone else here gave great advice, and I'm so sorry for you and your family's loss (I've been through house fires more than once, unfortunately). But don't count David's out due to the stories you hear - there are many of us here who have had excellent service from them, and for getting a dress quickly and oftentimes cheaply they are just fine.

  • thanks for all the advice. i am starting to think that david's is probably my best bet. i have just had really bad experiences with them over the course of planning my wedding and am reluctant to spend any more of my money there. but there is some good news now. the insurance company has already been to the site to assess the damage and having seen that only the brick chimney is still standing, they are going to take care of everything and since i have my receipts, they will cover most of the dress! i may have to choose a simpler gown, but i can get a new one now. i don't have to worry anymore about where the money will come from.
  • Hooray! I'm glad that they are going to at least cover the dress!

  • Also if you are in southeastern Indiana and close to Cincinnati, there is a HUGE bridal area in Reading with a number of dress shops. Some sell samples in all sizes. Just google Reading Bridal District. I am so sorry about your situation, but so glad to hear the insurance company pulled through!
