Help with BM dresses! (style question)

I need some advice! I have four bridesmaids and we're going dress shopping soon, but I want to be armed with some information before I go. I have two "plus-size" girls and two girls that look like stick figures... is there a certain dress type that might work well with both groups? I want them all to feel comfortable in their dresses.
Thanks in advance!

  • Do what I did, let them choose their own style and you choose the fabric, color, and length.  They will love you for this.  Pics in married bio if you want to see.

  • I also picked a designer and color and fabric and let me girls choose dresses they liked. This way, they were all comfortable.

  • That may be difficult to do what others suggested, pick a color, fabric, and a line. I've tried that with my bridesmaids and it turned out to be a disaster...I have five bridesmaids and when I took them all shopping, four of them fell completely in love with the exact same dress while one didn't like the dress. So was I going to let one of them have a dress completely different from the rest? No, because that'd look odd...it'd look like I threw her in at the last minute and "oops, they don't make the dress anymore...so you have to wear a different dress".

If you want to go with the same color, different style, same fabric, same line...then go for it, but I got to warn you, if your bridesmaids are picky/stylish, you need to do this ASAP. Do this at least 10 months before your wedding day. (It's good idea to order then about 5 months before). So you can figure out if this will work.

My suggestion: Get the two of your bridesmaids who are overweight and take them shopping. See what they like. They may go with a-line dresses. Then you decide whether or not you like it, and if you do, then take the other two shopping and have them try on the same dress. The reason you should take the overweight girls out first is because they are the ones that will have HARD time finding a dress they'd be comfortable in. The skinny girls, they can pretty much pull off any styles.

Also, just a suggestion...you should try to keep them separate when shopping, because the overweight girls are going to be very self-conscious or have low self esteem when trying on dresses that may not fit...in front of the skinny girls. I made that mistake, and I had some of them cry to me about how they didn't like trying on dresses that didn't fit on them but fitted on others.

  • ditto the others. I wanted to do the same.

however, my mom wanted all my BMs in the same dress. she's paying for it, and this is the one thing that she insisted on. okay mom... I explained this to my BMs, and asked their opinions. I found a v-neck, tea length dress from J. Crew that all of my BMs like, look good in, and can afford. 2 of my BMs are size 0, 1 is a 6, 1 is a 10, and 1 is a 14.

this is the dress that I was finally able to find that would flatter all of the BMs: http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WeddingParties/Wedding_Bridesmaid/dresses/silkchiffon/PRDOVR~96454/96454.jsp

I don't see anything wrong with this. One of my bridesmaids chose a dress that was different than what the other women wore, and it looked fine (look at the pictures in my married bio if you don't believe me).  No one thought, "Oh, she must have been a last minute addition."  That's ridiculous... lol.  Trust me, your guests are there to see you get married.  They don't care about the other details.  It was far more important to me that my bridesmaids were happy and comfortable.
