  As soon as you have a date picked. The purpose is to give your out of town guests as much notice to make accomodations as possible. Try and keep them to the most important guests though, because once you send a STD you must send an invite.

  I'm not sure what the exact "timing" is but I've usually gotten STD's at least 7 months in advance and they were sent to everyone, however on here I'm seeing that they are really only for the out-of-town guests. I agree with the above post.

  7 months. i disagree about OOT guests-some of the guests that we invited from our own town have infinately busier lives that oters-so that distinction is pretty generalized and incorrect.
  
  we sent one to each person being invited to the wedding. the pp is right-be sure if you send someone a save the date that you're sure to invite them

  I mailed mine out about 9 mon before and I had a bunch of OOTERS:-)
