What to do with my "old" baby bonnet

My mom just told me she has saved my baby bonnet to use for my "something old." I am so excited and happy she did this. However, I am not sure exactly what to do with it or how to incorporate it. Any ideas?

  • I've got nothing but I'll bet the DIY board would have some good suggestions.
  • Maybe there's some way the florist can use it to wrap your bouquet? That's where my something old was. It was a hankie though. I'm not sure you could use a bonnet in the same way, but it couldn't hurt to ask your florist.

  • I second the suggestion to ask the DIY board. This seems like an odd item to save for your "something old". My something old was a ring I got from my great grandmother after she passed that I wore on my right hand.
  • Is it just a normal bonnet?  I know my mom saved a particular bonnet of mine, which was actually designed so that just a couple stitches could be cut, and it would unfold into a handkerchief.

If you're not as concerned about physically carrying it, you could use a piece as an applique or something on a ringbearer pillow--my mom cut a piece of lace from her wedding dress and did that.

  • You could have it stiched to the under side of your dress by your seamstress.

I also wrapped my something old around my bouquet.  I think a bonnet is a lovely idea for your something old.

My grandmother told me that "good catholic girls" save a piece of their communion dress to be their something old.  I was like, thanks for telling us that when I was 8 and actually could have saved it, haha.  Kudos to your mom for having some foresight :-)

ETA: I've also seen people sew their something old onto the inside of their dress, so it's with them but not visible if that sounds better to you
  • I didn't have a hankie. That was a mistake.

So, I'm another vote for the bonnet = hankie idea.

  • Without knowing what the bonnet looks like...maybe you could have a drawstring put in the edge and make it your bridal purse??
