wording for attire

My wedding is an outdoors back yard wedding but i dont want people to think its ok to wear jeans to it, how do i let people know that its some what semi formal and i would appreceiate it if no one wore jeans. Guys dont have to wear a tie but I dont want guests to wear jeans.

    Don't write anything on the invitations. Send very formal looking invitations and spread your desires by word of mouth. One of the risks you take with backyard weddings is that people will think it's casual- they take attire cues from venue/time of day. These suggestions should help.

    You should not put any attire information on the invites - make sure they're formal looking, even though it's a casual wedding. This might help dictate what guests should wear.

    Also, do you have a wedding website? If so, your site would be a perfect place to put attire info!

    Like PPs said - have a formal invite and have your close families/friends spread it by word of mouth.  If you have a wedding website, maybe put something on there about it, but I wouldn't say anything specifically in the invites.

    I'm going to be contrarian, sort of. I agree with PPs. They've correctly stated the rules and the wedding industry consensus.

    However, whenever I talk to men about these things, they say nothing in the invitation tells them what to wear, unless it's spelled out. I've had to point out that even if they can't pick up clues from the "style" of the invitation, surely they can figure something out from the time of year, time of day, and location.

    Personally, I'm of the opinion that the rules and wedding industry consensus is passive-aggressive female-ness, and the rules should be changed to state dress codes, for the benefit of men who don't understand about type faces and wording and paper quality and colors.

    But I'm not going to be the one who first breaks the rules.
