Vendors Who Are Relatives

We have several vendors (photographer, cake, dj, minister) who are close relatives.  Their services are their gifts to us, but we want to give them each a gift card as a thank you, but can't decide on amount.  Help!

Re: Vendors Who Are Relatives

  • We can't really tell you how much to give someone.  You have to do what feels right and fits your budget.  Any amount is thoughtful especially when coupled with a nice hand written note expressing your gratitude for their service and gift.
  • 15-20% is good.  But give what you feel comfortable giving within your budget.  Our minister would not let us pay him, so we got him a giftcard for $50 to a resturant he likes.  He did not want it at first, but then accepted it.

I don't think you should feel obligated to follow a %15-20% rule.  That customary percentage was enacted to provide servers with extra compensation when they've done well since they only get $2.50 an hour due to the restaurant industry being exempt from the minimum wage laws.  But 15-20% of a $40 dinner with a server making $2.50/hr. is a whole lot different than 15-20% of $2000.  I don't think the two situations are the same. I think a flat rate would be just fine.  Maybe an extra $100 for those you appreciate or something else in that ballpark that you can afford seems reasonable to me.

  • what about a nice gift instead?  like a bottle of wine or a certificate to a dinner out?
you might spend less than a cash gift.

My aunt is doing the flowers and I got her a really pretty bracelet as a thank you.
