What are the traditional rules for who your parents invite to your wedding?

My parents are paying for our wedding, so the budget regarding how many people are invited isn't what is concerning me. Rather it is the limited space and the fact that my fiance and I have had to cut down quite a few people that we know and care about. My mom said she wanted to invite some people and was waiting for our final number of guests before she figured out who she would invite. I was expeciting maybe 5 more but she came back with 14 and is wanting to add more.That is taking us very close to our limit. Is it normal for your parents to invite several people especially when they are paying for it?

    Parents are going to add a ton of people to the guest list wether they are paying or not. My FI and I are hosting our own wedding - both of our parents contributed, which was nice, but we did not rely or ask them for anything - and it didn't take long for our list of 115 count of family and close friends turned into 170! Its important to them and honestly, sometimes the people they add are the ones who should be there. Even since we made our guest list of "close friends" less than 6 months ago, there are several of my friends that I'm not even close to anymore. People come and go, family is forever. Compromise and make it an event that the whole family willl look forward to as much as you do. All that matters is you're marrying the person you love.

    I personally believe that if your parents are paying for the wedding it should be because they want to its suppose to be their gift to yall ...and not feel like they have complete control over the entire guest list its your wedding not your parents. I would just talk to them ...my fiancees parents are paying and we had some of the same issues After we talked to them about it they wanted us to invite all our friends and family first and then depending on how that looked they would then add thier friends onto the guest list.
