Can I have a girl as a ring bearer?

My 12 year old almost step-daughter is an important part of my wedding. First I thought about having her as a junior bridesmaid but then, since we don’t have a ring bearer, I thought maybe she could deliver the rings to us. I think it’s such an important job and she would like to do it. Is having a girl as a ring bearer totally weird?

Why is it so important?  You do realize they carry fake rings and are merely a prop, right?

  • If she were 6 it would be ok, but at 12, she may think she's too "old" for the position.

You can still make her a Jr. BM AND have her carry the rings.  You don't need a ringbearer.
Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

  • I think 12 is a little too old to be a ring bearer or flower girl. I don't see any reason why a girl couldn't be a ring bearer. I would just ask her since she is old enough to decide what roll she would be comfortable with in the wedding.

Also, CA2 is right. They usually carry fake rings because the real ones could be lost while tied on a pillow. She is old enough that the real ones could be put on their; however if they get lost she will not be to blame.

  • For internet safety, I suggest you take your future last name off your ticker.  I assume your SN is your current name, and with the combination of the two, someone could get really crazy and find you.

  • If she wants to do it, then that's fine. The Ring Bearer need not be a boy. Ask her and see what she says.

Also, if she's doing everything an adult bridesmaid is required to do (wear a certain outfit - age appropriate, of course - walk down the aisle, stand/sit quietly during the ceremony and pose for photos), then there's no need for the "junior" title.

  • I agree with pp. Have her be a bm AND carry the real rings. What an honor for her!

  • ditto malphabet and stina.  Make her the bridesmaid who also carries the rings.  However, at most weddings, the Best Man and/or MOH hold the rings for the ceremony.

However, to answer your OP:  RB is not a gender specific role.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
