wwsbd?

So the following happened to me this weekend.. I am curious as to what others would have done. I tend to be a slight germaphobe and I wonder if I freak out too easily...

H and I frequent a tiny hole in the wall pizza/pasta place a few blocks from our home. We went in Saturday and when I walked in, the hostess, who works RIGHT in the same area as where the cooks pass the food to the servers, was blowing her nose. After going to town on her nose, she tossed the tissue, turns to me and offers to seat us. She then grabs menus and seats us. As I watch from our table, she begins stacking new plates. She NEVER WASHED HER HANDS.

I tried to ignore it and then decided we had to leave. Of course we had to tell her we were leaving the table so I was honest and said that she touched menus and plates and never washed her hands after openly blowing her nose near the food items. She looked horrified and we left. I feel bad because they are nice in there and I am fairly certain other waitresses heard even though I tried to be quiet.

But seriously- who wants snot on their plates?

am I nuts?

  • I'm nott really a germaphobe, but that would have definitely grossed me out. I don't think you're nuts for leaving. And she should be horrified. That's disgusting.
  • Personally, I'm not uptight about these things, but I understand how other people can be.
  • Not nuts at all.  I call people on that crap all the time.

[QUOTE]That would gross me out, too.  And I'm quite the opposite of being a germaphobe. <strong> I'm kind of surprised that the restaurant doesn't have a policy regarding stuff like that. </strong> When I was a server, I'd go to the bathroom to blow my nose.  And then wash my hands.

I'm pretty sure there are laws about it.

    I'm not a germaphobe, and I probably would've side-eyed, but would've stayed.  I don't think you're nuts for leaving though.

I was shocked too. we LOVE this place. I used to go there as a kid with my grandmother! I really want to think it was a one-off issue. I am now too embarassed to go back there but I still want to be able to do takeout... I just don't know now! I think the girl was new too. I'd never seen her before and she seemed kind of young. H didn't see it happen but he thinks I should have said something as SOON as she tried to seat us but I was so uncomfortable!

This. I probably would have never noticed. But since you did, I don't think you are crazy for calling her on it. She probably just didn't think about it and will be more careful now.

  • I am not a germaphobe, let's start with that.  But.  I refuse to blow my nose in front of anybody.  It's gross.  One of my biggest peeves is when people do that in class when they can easily walk out of the room to do it.  So, yeah, I probably would have been like "duuuuude..." and thought about leaving.

I'm pretty sure food poisoning is caused by improperly stored/cooked food. You would get a cold from someone's snot, not a random stomach virus.

It can also be caused by fecal matter entering food - which is why servers are supposed to wash their hands after using the restroom.

Unless the server is touching someone's raw food and not washing hands before grabbing a dish that's read to be brought out to the table.

At least, that's how I interpreted it.

<div>I don't think you could get food poisoning from snot.  Maybe you could get something if they didn't wash their hands after going to the bathroom but again, probably not food poisoning.  I got food poisoning from chicken salad.  It was one of two things... the meat wasn't cooked well enough or it hadn't been properly stored in a cool place.  Never again will I eat that... ever.</div><div>
</div><div>ETA:  Fecal matter then YES but I mean, that's scarypants if people don't wash their hands after a #2.  I suppose that happens though. ::shudders::</div>

You don't get food poisoning from someone blowing their nose.  You might get their cold, though.  I think that's the difference for me - I'm not afraid of a cold.  Now, if she just in the bathroom doing something yucky and never washed her hands, I'd probably be a bit more squeamish.  But, I dunno... I tend to let this stuff go.
  • I was more concerned about catching her cold :-P Although, the ick factor alone was enough to turn me off. Sadly this is only one of like 3 restaurants in my town that I actually like too...

  • I don't blame you, but I'm pretty disgusted by other people's bodily functions.  I hate seeing people blow their noses and touch things, so I would have said something and left.

Lbarr, I had food poisoning from sausage and peppers and now just the smell of it can make me sick. Blegh.

I would probably have asked to talk to a manager and let them handle it.  That's gross.

It also reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where the chef doesn't wash his hands and Jerry freaks out.

What the hell? Get your toilets fixed! That's so gros.

Speaking of gross, someone clarify this for me. You know those trashcans in women's stalls? Those are for your "sanitary products," right? We have those bins in all stalls, and they just put signs over them that says something like, "Please help keep our bathrooms clean. These bins are for CLEAN PRODUCTS only. Please throw used materials into the trash can by the sinks."

So people would have to walk out of the stalls with their used feminine products and throw them away, in front of people. WTF. Aren't those bins for used stuff?
  • That makes no sense at all, Sesh. I'd be so grossed out if I saw people walking their used tampons out to the sinks. Nasty.

  • So... I can throw out the packaging to my tampon there, but I can't throw out my actual tampon.  Good to know.  Segregate the trash.  You wouldn't want it to get dirty.

</div><div>Huh, that's odd. We have signs on ours that say, "Please take a brown bag and discard your trash in the large trash receptacle near the door." I think that's just as awkward, but I do it anyways. Apparently our custodian is 'grossed out' by feminine products and would like us to discard the stuff ourselves.

  • I probably should have told a manager but it's a TINY place and since I thought she may be new, I wanted to keep her from getting in serious trouble. However, as I said it, another waitress sorta breezed by and may have caught what I said.... again- it's a tiny place...

  • OK good, so I'm not crazy. I don't understand what kind of clean stuff you'd have to throw away in the bathroom stall except for the packaging for pads and tampons, and  it makes no sense that you can't throw everything in there. I've considered writing my own comment back on the paper and seeing what happens.

Yes, and most places are required by law to have a separate bin for used sanitary products. Where I used to work the state came in and made me go out and but a separate bin just for such use.

Not sure about that sign it doesnt make sense in regards to the bin.

  • I have seen people get fired on the spot for this kind of stuff.  Its absolutely unacceptable in a place that serves food and she should know better.

I would still call and tell the manager.

Ok- that would really gross me out, and I may have left also. It would also leave me wondering about how well she washes her hands after using the bathroom. ugh.

And yeah- you wouldn't have gotten food poisoning but that doesn't really take much away from the ick factor. And I am more of a germaphobe. I can't help it, I deal with them on a regular basis for work.
  • That's unacceptable. I took Servsafe as part of my nutrition curriculum and the hand to food contact is nothing t shrug off. I would told her the same exact thing. I would never blow my nose in a restaurant in front of people, especially if I was serving food and I'd WASH MY HANDS.
