DIY Shoes: Part 2

Good morning!

So I played with the sandals a little more and have 2 more ideas to share. Honest opinions preferred, as usual. :) Suggestions are good, too. I took photos of the shoes alone, and on my nasty foot (please excuse my bright orange nail polish) - so we can see how it would look worn.

#1: I took the pair from yesterday and snipped off the ends of the ribbons, leaving just frayed knots. I think I would have to use a spray glue on these to keep them from untying, if I went with this option. (Suggestions here helpful.)

#2: I took a new pair and simply wrapped the straps with the green ribbon (same color as the BM's dresses). Then I glued a few sparklies on in the center, which successfully covered up the little gap in the center between the 2 ribbons I used.

Re: DIY Shoes: Part 2

  • If we like the multicolored knots... I could conceivably tie them all the way to the back ends of the straps. I just didn't feel like doing the work today until I got some opinions. :)
  • I like sandal #2 - to me they look polished and not at all DIYish.  Good job!
  • Do both so that they're not all the same
  • Stack... another idea I had was that I've got 4 different colored ribbons (green, red, yellow, orange)... and I have 4 BMs. What if I did the wrap like #2 but each pair in a different color?

FYI- their bouquets' wraps are each going to incorporate a different color of those 4... they will be white wraps with a colored ribbon criss-crossing. I'm also pretty sure I'm going to buy paper parasols for photo props, again in the 4 colors. The BM with the green shoes could have a green wrap on her flowers and a green parasol, etc. Hmm.
  • I really like #1, and I like it tied to where it is (not all the way back) - looks like something I'd wear to the beach :)

but I like bright colors :-p

  • I like #2.

#1 is still meh, in my opinion.  I might like them better if you did the same thing (ribbon knots) but with one color.  With the multicolored knots I think it looks like part of a luau costume.

Yeah, maybe I'm trying to push the colors a little too much. :) My MOH has already had to talk me down from using too much color in the reception decor... she told me it was going to look like a circus. Hehe.

  • Okay ladies... re: #2: Do the sparkles look like they're just randomly stuck there? I'm wondering if I should try something else... or nothing at all? I can take a little more care with the ribbon in the corner there so I don't have to cover it up.
  • #2 is better, but I still think plain flip flops are the most re-wearable.  Unless they can take the ribbon off after the wedding.

What about doing something like this? Click here.

  • I'm not a fan of the sparkles, personally.  I think just the ribbon would be nice, but you could try making a small ribbon bow if you feel like you need something.

  • fang- the ribbon on #2 is just knotted and tightly wrapped. They could easily take it off and just have plain white flip flops after the wedding. And thanks for that link! I was kind of thinking something like that... I'm using sunflowers in our bouquets and I thought of looking for a sunflower charm to put on the sandals instead of the cheap looking plastic sparklies.

[QUOTE]I like #2 better.  Before you make all of them, you should wear a pair around for the day.  The ribbon might make the straps a bit thick and that could irritate some of the girls' feet.  To be honest, if I was a BM in your wedding, I prefer plain flip flops that I could use again.  <strong>If you give these out, and they decide not to wear them, will be you offended?

    Not at all.
  • I think you should just give out plain flip-flops, so the girls can wear them again.  I mgiht wear shoes like that for one night if I needed to, but then I'd toss them.

  • I have an aversion to white flip flops, so I'd have to say that I wouldn't like these. I would never wear white again; they'd probably go in the trash. But that's just me personally.

Of the two, I'd have to say #2 looks better, but I wouldn't go too crazy with color; you don't want your BM's looking cartoony, you know?
  • Pink & Georgia... I realize there's always the chance that the girls could toss these shoes the next day. They could decide to wear something of their own that day and never even stick their feet in them. That's why I spent $2 per pair. :) And so far, about $5 on supplies to play with embellishing them.

I've gotten some questions about why I'm doing this... 3 of these 4 girls are married, and I was a BM in all of their weddings. Matching shoes were part of the BP gifts at each one. So, 1) I'd like to keep up the tradition. And, 2) I'd like these to be a little more special than just "I bought these for you and stuck them in a bag."
  • I really like #2, actually! I'm a big fan of bright colors, but I think that #2 looks very classy and polished. I'd wear them all the time. Then again, I have a pair of falling-apart flip flops that I've had for years, so I'd be happy to start fresh :) Good job!
  • I didn't read part 1 so I have to guess what you are doing here.

Do you intend on having your BMs and yourself wear these flip flops at your wedding? I don't think flip flops should be worn at a wedding. I think you have taken this DIY too far. I think your decorating makes them look cheesy. And I hope you don't intend on wearing them because your feet should not wear flip flops. They don't look attractive.
