So, my partner and I are now the proud parents of two baby boxer puppies. We ran accross a backyard breeder that was selling puppies at a very low cost, basically, to whomever wanted them. No screening, no care for who they are going to. We were very concerned about the conditions the puppies were in, and decided we would buy the females so they didn't end up on the breeder circuit. The area where this guy lives is famous for backyard breeders. And they end up selling the females to each other so they can continue to breed them.
My partner went to go look at them, and they are only SIX weeks old. It's illegal to sell puppies in California before 8 weeks old, and G (my partner) tried to convince him to keep them for another 2 weeks, but this guy wasn't having it. G and I talked on the phone for about 30 minutes trying to decide what to do, and in the end, we decided that we would buy them anyway. If we didn't, someone else was going to and these beautiful dogs would end up being puppy factories.
So, now, along with our 105 pound rottweiler and our 57 pound pittie/dalmation mix, we have two pretty boxer girls.
We are going to keep them both for now, get some weight on them, get them both spayed as soon as possible, and then most likely, rehome one of them.
For now though... we are a four dog household. Holy crap.

To me, it was better to get the females off the breeding circuit. I know this area, these guys just pass the females back and forth to each other and then dump them on the street or at the shelter after 3-4 litters. I work closely with a rescue in that area (outside of Fresno, CA).
I figured, it was better to prevent 40-50 puppies (2 females, an average of 5-7 puppies, 3-4 litters) from happening over the next few years.</div>

PS - I talked to two rescues in addition to the one that I work closely with in the area before we decided to go this route, because I didn't want to support a backyard breeder either. I never buy puppies. We always adopt and we routinely do dog rescue/foster, I've probably had 100+ foster dogs in the past 2 decades. Under the circumstances though, everyone agreed that getting the females out of there was the best possible scenario.

Your reason for wanting to rescue them is one of the top reasons people give for buying from a pet store or BYB. There are thousands of dogs available for rescue from shelters and breed-specific rescues, where your money won't go towards encouraging irresponsible breeders to continue doing what they're doing. I can tell you're an animal lover and your heart is in the right place, but this is a topic I've become somewhat knowledgeable about and have gotten pretty passionate about it. What's done is done, and I'm sure you're happy to have the puppies (btw, I LOVE boxers) - but others who read this should be informed that by buying from a BYB, they're just helping to perpetuate irresponsible practices.</div><div>

Trust me, I AGREE that buying from BYB is perpetuating the mess. I DO rescue. I foster and also do rescue transport. I know the deal. I wasn't interested in buying a puppy. I never buy puppies.
My last boxer Ellie, came from a breeder in this same region. We don't know which breeder, since there are dozens of BYBs within a 5 mile radius in that area, but we know she was a puppy factory. She was dumped on/near the freeway infested with ticks, was missing huge patches of fur, and was about 25 pounds underweight when I got her. She had clearly had multiple litters of puppies and then was tossed aside, probably when she wasn't producing "quality" puppies.
This was her when the rescue found her (they had to shoot her with a tranquilizer dart while she was running across the freeway)

My only point is... I do know the rescue/puppy mill/byb cycle. I have been doing it for a long time. My first concern when we were considering doing this was "f*ck... I don't want them to get any of our money. that will just mean they will produce another litter. Which is why I consulted with the local rescues I work with routinely to see if my "heart being in the right place" thought process was even a remotely good idea.

thanks! I'll be the first one to say that the solution was/is not ideal. Under the circumstances, nothing would be. Well, maybe trying to dognap the parents he currently has on site. We gave him our number and offered to pay to have the parents fixed and rehomed if they decide to get rid of her. So, we are doing the best we can within the law and the resources we have.</div>

As someone who is very involved in this issue, I think you did the right thing. It's kind of a double edged sword, in that leaving them, leaves them likely to being bred a few times then dumped. On the other hand, you saved 2 beautiful dogs from being subjected to that kind of treatment, and I can't say that's the wrong thing to do. No one should prepetuate the problem with BYB, but thanks to you, two pups are going to have a great life.
Realistically, these girls would get bred a few times, then shelter dumped, so you probably just stopped 2 dogs from the system, and their subsequent puppies most likely.
