WTF Target product

Have you all seen this? I was searching for bookends and came across these, which are meant to contain live fish. CLICK

What a stupid and inhumane idea.

  • I don't really see the problem. It's no different than having an aquarium.

  • I think they could be bigger - but it's just like a fish bowl that plenty of people have.
  • Those are really small, though.

Then you get smaller fish. Fish will only grow as large as the space they are provided with. It's not like those fish in the picture are real.

EDIT: Or a betta. Those guys are used to living in puddles. That would be like a mansion for them.

  • Yep, looks like a fish bowl to me. Albeit a kind of small one, but eh. As long as you don't forget that they're up there on your bookshelf and forget to feed them. That would totally happen to me.

  • Yeah, those are pretty small for fish.

I completely agree with one reviewer- bookends usually fall over. I wouldn't want water and fish all over the place.

  • Emma- they had a joke about those on SNL last weekend.

    This.
  • I pretty sure those fish in that picture are real.

Maybe it's just me then, but I hate products like this. Goldfish shouldn't actually be kepts in bowls, and those that are have a very short lifespan. They need a filter to oxygenate the water and a heater to regulate the temperature of the water.

To me it is a lot different than an aquarium. I just hate any "live animals as decoration" ideas out there that are not giving the animal what it needs to survive. Similar to live fish centerpieces.

  • Don't goldfish require filtration? I wouldn't put a goldfish in these, but a female betta -- okay, sure. It's just a slightly odd-shaped bowl.

    This...

... I'm not so sure about.

Lol, I hadn't seen the SNL clip yet.

And as for the fish, I thought the fact that it was holding stuff up and could get knocked over/is being moved around all the time was the problem, not the size? If it's just for staging, and you never use the books, it's probably not a big deal.
  • Yeah, a betta could live in those. And you could have two, since they wouldn't see each other.

It's really NMS, though. I'd be afraid of knocking them over. And I know some people say fish ARE decorations, but to me, they're pets. And this is putting them too firmly in the "decoration" camp for my liking. Plus, my cats would be trying to jump on the bookcase more than they do now.

I saw an infomercial for a product like that only it was men using it. We thought it was a joke at first too.

On a semi-related note, has anyone seen this infomercial?

Really people? We can't even crack our own eggs now? Although I am kind of fascinated at its ability to scramble the egg inside the shell before you crack it.

My point is, I don't care for using animals as decoration at all. Even though fish are pretty to look at. If you bring home a living animal, I think you have a responsibilty to provide what the animal needs for survival.

  • And the top of those bookends are clearly open so that you can feed whatever is in there and change out the water.

I still fail to see the problem.

    Goldfish Care Basics:
    http://www.firsttankguide.net/goldfish.php

In a nutshell: No bowls. They need a 10 gallon tank, a filter, a thermometer and hiding spaces.

Again, IMO, it's cruel to buy an animal and not provide it with what it needs to be healthy.

I have two fishtanks, and both are decorative and pretty. But I also spend a lot of money and time making sure it's a healthy environment for the fish that live in them.
