Re: Who pays the taxes!?

  • If she offers to pay the tab, I'd guess she'd pay the taxes too?
  • I would assume that taxes are part of the bar tab.

    $500, by the way.

    I don't understand?

She said she'll cover the whole tab, that's why I was wondering. Idk, she scares me lol so I wanted to know before bringing it up to her somehow, thinking about asking FI to handle this one lol.

  • Beer and wine for 100 is roughly 2,200, then the 20% gratuity and 6% sales tax on top of that is about 500$

  • Have your fiance tell her. "Thanks so much for offering to pick up the bar tab. We estimate it will be $X total. That includes $500 in taxes and $Y in other charges. Is that what you were expecting? [or what you meant?]"

So, yes, in principle the bar tab includes the taxes, but just in general you shouldn't expect people to pay for something, even after offering to do so, until they have a real good idea of what it's going to cost. This gives her an out (and privately with her son) if your estimate is more than she had in mind, or if for some reason she won't pay the taxes or service charges or whatever.

[In-laws who live where there aren't taxes, who offer to pay for something where there are taxes, may NOT have factored those taxes into their budgets.]
  • I like Elisabeth's advice here.

There are four states in the U.S. that don't have sales tax.  I imagine that if one of these people were going to a wedding not in that state, it might not be something that wasn't considered during the offer.

Kind of like my friends from Oregon that used to take road trips and be shocked that they had to pump their own gas in Washington or California.

May or may not be the case of OP, but just putting that out there.
