Renting vs. Buying Tux/Suit?

So I've been thinking, and I'm more worried about my future hubbies tux/suit option for the wedding more than I am my dress! Lol! We've had 2 different experiences with Mens Warehouse. The first was for junior prom. We paid $120 for the whole tux rental. (Pants,shirt,shoes,tie,vest,suspenders), and senior year we paid $160 for the same thing, just a bit nicer suit. Does anybody remember when they have to be returned? I also know that my brother got a super nice pair of pants, a sport jacket/coat, a shirt and a tie for like, $190ish after tax. My question is if we are having a small wedding (30-50 people), can he get away with a nice pair of pants and a sport coat? Ahhhh! Help?!

I'm not having a small wedding, and we're still not doing tuxes. FI and his groomsmen are just wearing black suits. Since most of them already own black suits, they don't have to spend any money.

I'm not set on tuxes. Tuxes have the tails, and are more fancy, correct? We tried Joseph A Banks when we were looking for my brothers suit, and they wanted $250-$300 a piece. Lol. I'm planning on spending around $400 for my dress. And with his line of work, he doesn't need to/own a suit or anything.

FI and I are having a formal wedding, so we're opting for tuxes (but FI will wear an ivory dinner jacket).

My brother got married this past July and their wedding wasn't as formal as ours but still a fair size (110 guests). The guys wore nice black suits and the girls wore cocktail dresses. My Dad got married in September and they wore suits as well.

Should we go ahead and just buy a suit? He's got absolutely nowhere else to wear it. Somebody mentioned funerals, vow renewal, ect., but he is constantly losing/gaining weight. Lol. I'm so stumped!

I personally think that every man needs a suit. As a PP said, Jos A Bank is always running some kind of sale. I would check out their website to see if they have a sale going on, or you could drop by a store to see if they have anything coming up.

What's the best deal you guys have gotten on rentals? My FI is wearing a suit he has, but we're wanting to rent them for our 3 boys as they will never wear one again before they outgrow them and our 13 year old is a 30x36 so very hard to fit. I see deals all the time, but no idea which deal is the best one. Does Groupon ever do rentals? I got an email for $40 off at Men's Warehouse, but they have $30 off on their site so I'm thinking they may come out with a better deal down the line. We have some time, but I want to jump on a good deal when I find it.

we purchased a suit for FI at JC Penny for under $200 - I love that we're not going to have to worry about returning it and that he will be able to wear it again for nice occassions in the future.

I work at a tuxedo rental store. this is not entirely true. They can have tails, and do not always have the satin strip. It completely depends on the style of tuxedo you rent. Most tux rental stores will have upwards of 30 tuxes to choose from.

Also, check around beofre you make any decision. I would be you would be able to find a reasonable priced tux for rent. Our most $$$ tux is only $119, so I would think you would be able to find something comparable.

I asked him what he wanted to do, and he said he had no idea. Lol. So much for that. We're planning a trip to the mall in the next week or so, so we'll definitely be doing some shopping and price comparing!

I'm not sure if they are in your area, but a discount seller called K&G often has suits buy 1 get 2 free. You can order them online if you don't have one near you. That way you can get all your GM suits too. There suits run about $200.

Jos A Banks does often run sales, but they have very expensive suits. We rented FI's tux from them and the basic tux with upgraded shirt is $160. We can pick it up the Wednesday before our Friday wedding and can drop it off the following Monday. So they give us some time to get it returned.

To xobride: Try tinytux.com for your boys's tuxes. They have good prices! There "economy" 5 piece tux starts at $40 for smaller sizes. They have infant to young adult. Then you can resell them on ebay afterwards. My nephew's tux rental for my brother's wedding Nov 2010 was over $100 to rent! It cost almost as much as the adults!

Sorry if I am misinformed. But here we call them tuxes with tails or regular tuxes. And it is to my knowlegde that most tux rental shops to aswell.

I'm in late, but highly recommend following the link CMGR posted.

Please, if you're going to do black tie, do it right, or don't do it at all!

Fun fact: ever wonder why you've seen the suited-up male housekeeping staff (butlers, chauffeurs, etc.) of the well-to-do wear tailcoats with black trousers, black bowties, white shirts, and cummerbunds (think Alfred Pennyworth from Batman)?

Answer: it's because that combination of attire is not meant to be worn together, which a gentleman would know. That look is neither morning dress, nor is it white tie (the only times when tails are appropriate). Historically, housekeeping staff members were purposefully dressed in inappropriate attire combinations so they'd be set apart from actual guests.

So, the Gent should ask himself: "Shall I look like the Groom or the waitstaff?"
