How much was your cake?

FMIL doesn't believe me when I say we can't get a 3-tier cake decorated elaborately from a home-based baker for less than $300.  She thinks it would save time and money to find someone who works out of her home to bake my cake.  Costco/Walmart isn't an option because I don't trust them to make my cake safe for me to eat.

And how do I schedule an appointment to get a quote for a cake when I know I won't be ordering?

you can just call and they will quote you prices over the phone.  most places do it by the slice/per person.  3 tiers i am not sure you can get one for 300.   you can always get a smaller one and then have a sheet cake to serve to the guests.  they will never know, they cut the cake in the kitchen anyway.  we went to icing on the cake in newton, they are really great.  we got a 4 tier for 500.  the cake there is really good too.

I got a 3 tiered cake that serves 100 people for 325... 375 with delivery to my location. And my cake has lots of shells that decorate it. You can definitely get it for around 300 dollars if you shop around. (I am going through a reccommended vendor out of RI)

I think ours is $4/slice.  It's a very simple design and all one flavor (lemon with a raspberry filling).

Our cake is $2.50 pp. We don't need to give him a count until two weeks before, when we know how many people will be at the wedding, but I'm estimating it will cost about $350.00 after the $25 delivery fee and an extra $0.25 for the filling we're choosing. I definitely don't think you are going to get what you want for $300, maybe you can have FMIL call some bakeries for you to get price quotes- one less thing for you to do, and she will see how much cakes cost!

I would try shopping around but in the end- a sheet cake for the guests would work best. We are getting a three tiered cake from Monitilios that came out to $750 total.. thankfully our vendor is paying all but $95 of it! the 95 was just a monogram we added and a fondant upgrade.... the rest was all standard!

Most of the quotes I got were about $5-$5.5 a slice, once you factor in delivery. We are only getting cake for about half our guests, because it is going to be buffet style and I know not everyone will take some, plus we have other desserts.

We're going to Konditor Meister, who is included in the package in our hotel.  But I'm pretty sure they charge $3 per person.  We are getting a 3 tiered cake for 80 people with no upgrades/extras, so that would be under $300.  It is really pretty, buttercream icing with decorations, icing roses and ribbon. You might want to contact them.  Their cake is *delicious* too!

We're looking at around 100 servings (and frankly, we don't have $300 to spare in the budget).  I cannot eat cake from a bakery because I'm allergic to dairy - not in a life-threatening manner, but I will have some serious discomfort if I have more than about a tablespoon of frosting.  I don't trust commercial bakeries to not screw up and use their premade buttercream with real dairy instead of soy, and that peace of mind means that I will be making the cake myself.  I just have to convince FMIL.

My cake is coming from Dessert Works in Norwood. I have no idea how much they cost normally since it's part of a package deal with the reception hall, and I haven't met with them yet.

You can try The Artisan Kitchen. Their website says cakes for 100 people average around $350. Be prepared to forego a lot of extras though, like the icing flowers or extravagant designs.

The other option for saving money is to do a small, 2 or 3 tier wedding cake with a far less extravagant sheet cake for guests. You can definitely do that for $300!
