NWR; Women Only Gyms?

I posted this on GIS too, then realized that I want answers NOW  Yell

I have never been to a gym before, and am planning to visit two tomorrow for information on memberships, (for some reason they don't like to post membership rates online).

I am going to choose between 2 ladies only gyms. Mademoiselle Fitness, and a smaller non-chain ladies gym in in town.

What should I ask/look for when comparing the two?

Should I just stick with a traditional unisex gym?

Re: NWR; Women Only Gyms?

  • The gym I used to go to before I moved had a seperate area for just women. I don't know why, but when I enrolled there I thought I would use it a lot but I only ever used the main unisex area. I, personally, don't even notice other people when I'm at the gym. I'm there to do what I do and then leave. I figure everyone else is doing the same and don't notice me either.

word of warning, mademoiselle will fuuck your payments, hardcore. Ive been with them for a year and a half now, and they have taken my payments out on the wrong day (sometimes 4 or 5 days early) atleast 10 times - sometimes it is a problem, sometimes it isnt, but they claim there is nothing they can do about it. While I like the gym and their facilities, they are really good at pissing me off with their financial department. Also, they have really shite customer service and are good at harassing you for assessements so they can try to illustrate how fat and out of shape you are to sell personal training packages.

Edit: that said, I met my personal trainer at my gym and I love her to death - she has been working with me for the past year and each time I decide to buy sessions with her, sales people I have also built a relationship with have worked with me to get me what I want for the price im willing to pay. I will say though, that I only seem to have gotten this treatement after seeing these people for x amount of months and building a relationship. I got treated like a deadbeat by a new person a few months ago who tried to scam me into paying way more than I wanted for something I didnt even want.

I dont think im painting a very good picture here...
  • I sell memberships at Equinox in SF and I've worked for women-only gyms before. Join the one that makes you feel the most comfortable, that is the most convenient for you to get to, and that has the best selection of Equipment. Consistency is the key to getting results, and you won't go if it's not convenient and comfortable.

Also, ask what is included in membership. Classes are great if you need motivation and they allow you to change up your workouts so you don't get bored. See if they offer any complimentary training or fitness assessments so you know where you are starting from.

Places like Curves are great for ladies that have never been to a gym before but they won't keep you seeing results in the long run because you will use the same machines every time you go work out.
  • My suggestion would be to pay close attention to the quality/state of their equipment. I chose my gym because it had the fancy machines with tv's on them and a cardio theater. However, over half of the machines don't have properly functioning tvs/cable so it kind of defeats the purpose. The cardio theater is still nice when they're playing a movie I like.

I would probably still choose this gym over a smaller gym due to the fact that I have major ADD when I work out and I need anything and everything to motivate me and make me forget I'm actually working out. However, if there were two gyms that were comparable I would definitely pick the gym with the better quality machines.

Also, factor in how close each one is to you. I can't tell you how many times I wimp out on working out because I don't feel like fighting traffic to get there.
  • Thanks for the honesty Nebb, I would probably be paying upfront, instead of monthly, I dunno. Working as a bank teller has shown be the bad side of pre-authorized payments.

Good advice everyone. They are both fairly close to home, so I'll see what kind of vibes I get tomorrow. Should I take my "gear" with me, will I need to buy a lock for the lockers?

  • You should also go to the clubs at the time of day you will usually be going to work out. That way you can see how busy they are and if you will have to wait to get on the equipment you want. Most gyms I've been to require you to bring your own lock for the lockers, but some have card key lockers.

  • This is not exactly responsive to your question, but . . .

Usually you will get a better deal (sometimes dramatically so) if you wait until the end of the month to approach about a new gym membership, since the salespeople are always trying to improve their final numbers for the month.  If you're eager to get started right away, you could game the free trial periods at a few of the different gyms that you're considering and make your decision towards the end of August.

Ask if you get monthly meetings with a personal trainer with your membership.  My gym is co-ed but this is what sold me on it.  The trainer will come up with a new routine every four weeks for you to follow so that your body doesn't get stuck in a rut and you can continue to lose weight, maintain...whatever it is that you need at the moment.
