Groom name change?

Hello!  My FI and I plan to take each others last names after the wedding. For me, this is as simple as writing my new name on the marriage certificate (I assume?). For my FI, it seems he has to request a name change through the court? I'm looking up information in Google, but it's not very clear.

Does anyone have experience with the groom changing his name? What'd you have to do? Thanks!

Re: Groom name change?

  • Dont forget that you still need to "legally" change your last name. Once you get your marriage licenses you need to go to the social security office to legally change it...then of course your license, credit cards etc;  For your FI I'm not sure...maybe you could also check with the social security office?  maybe he could do it there as well....
  • Haven't experienced this yet, but when I was looking up the basic info a while ago, there didn't seem to be a lot about how the details regarding name change happens, ie what's kosher (like your FH changing his name). But, I do recommend just calling the clerks office in the town where you're getting married. I really thought that CT was a state where either party can change their name when they get married, no extra hoops, but I could totally be wrong. Good luck!

  • your FI is takingYOUR last name? And you're taking his?? I don't get it...
    Anyway, changing names requires
    • Marriage certificate (local town clerk at whatever town you get married in)
    • Social security office
    • DMV
