Exactly how offensive is this plan...?

My fiance joined the air force. We found out his ship date a couple of days ago (October 12th). Up to now I had been planning a tenative wedding hoping he'd still be here, etc.--the recruiter told us it could be up to a year of waiting; turns out he didn't have to wait very long.

Everyone in our families has fed us the idea of doing the JOP and then holding a wedding ceremony later. My gut instinct on this has always been no, I just flat don't wanna do it. I don't want to get married after I'm already married that is just strange to me. I don't care if other ppl do it at all, though, btw. I think everyone should do what they and their families feel comfortable with.

I've decided I'd like to have a small ceremony (in early October) in a local park at sunset with immediate family members only--with the exception of Grandparents if they are able to attend; followed by a 3 course meal that Fi and I will treat everyone to.

My issue with this is obviously many ppl wont be invited. My two bestfriends whom I've already asked to be bridesmaids wont be able to attend. We will let everyone know we plan on throwing a reception for everyone at a later date but I feel awful saying...hey come celebrate our marriage with us eventhough you weren't invited to the wedding, though...I feel its a better option than not including the families in anything.

Re: Exactly how offensive is this plan...?

• My FI is in the Army and deployed right now. He is due back just a little beforethe wedding date (thanks to an extention). It is a big joke with me that there may be a wedding with no groom if the Army has its way. =)

I think a small ceramony i the park in 2 months is very doable. Maybe just have a small cake set up and punch, or a BBQ as somone else suggested. I did not want to do a JOP wedding either and have the same feelings as you did (it isn't forme but it is perfect for others).

Good Luck

you know what.. i wouldn't even bother asking a question on this board. people are rude and disrespectful. stick to making posts on your local knot board where if somebody says something rude you can just find out where they live. i think your plan is fine. if your bridesmaids dont like it then they dont like it. theres nothing you can do about it. you have been waiting for 4 years to marry your fiance you should do it whenever and however you feel like it. and by the way you don't look naive at all. you look like somebody who is having a dilemma and needs some advice. i apologize on behalf of the *girls* on this board who have a nasty attitude. good luck.

• It's not tacky at all. Do it.
• Its your day and you need to do what makes you happy.  =)  It really shouldn't offend anyone else, but if for some reason it does, oh well.  You wouldn't be the first bride that annoyed a few people on their wedding day.. in fact if you didn't you'd probably be the first bride that didn't do anything to offend at least someone.  Posts on this board alone have proven sometimes people get catty about things that don't really matter.  You're in love, you're getting married, and your friends and family are happy for you.  That's all that matters at the end of the day.
• invite everyone. they will understand short notice. if it is really important, they will find a way to be there; if they already have plans or can't come, i'm sure they will at least be happy that you included them (tried to).

remember what the true meaning of your wedding day is- idk if you're having a religious ceremony, but no matter what, it's celebrating the beginning of a new life for you as husband and wife. no one, no logistics, and no timeline can take that away from you!

Good luck!

• My best friend eloped with her husband who's in the navy. I was supposed to be maid of honor. I admit I was a little hurt by not being there, but her happiness is more important to me. She is going to be my MOH along with my 11 year-old sister.

Everyone keeps asking if they are going to have something to celebrate. They are doing a casual open house type thing. The people who want to celebrate and bring gifts will.

This actually isn't very uncommon in the military!
Best of luck to the two of you!

• I have been to a reception like this before. The bride & groom had their small ceremony videotaped & showed it during the meal portion of the ceremony. Do whatever works for you & for fiance though!
In Response to Re: Exactly how offensive is this plan...? : May I ask where and when you did this process? I don't know of anyone being able to get a K-1 visa in less than 3 months, and that's ranging from places like the UK to Brazil. just curious.

I *think* (not sure, could be totally wrong) that aMrs is from the US and moved elsewhere, so she may be talking about visas in the foreign country (UK? Australia?) rather than the K1.
• Do what you're comfortable with, time-wise and budget-wise. No need to hugely stress yourself out about it, especially with all the big changes coming up for you two in the near future.  If you're close with your parents, get their advice, they might know the family's thoughts a little better, or maybe they could ask a few people.  But definitely don't get too stressed out about it.  They are your family and friends and they should be understanding about your decision.

<div>Thanks. I was about to send off an angry missive to my lawyer demanding to know about he super secret quick process that she hid from us. Which would have been awkward, considering she is MIL's boss. </div>

• You can send out save-the-dates before you have everything else planned; two months notice on a save-the-date is definitely enough, and then send out invitations when you're ready, in a few weeks.
• I can feel you. Here's what i think you should do. invite everyone to the park and if you cannot afford a sit down for everyone; then do a buffet style or appetizers and cake. this way you are married and you have everyone you want there. It doesn't have to be super expensive... also after basic training, your FI may want to invite his new friends to the wedding. These are usually bonds that last a lifetime. You could do a private civil ceremony so that you are covered under his benefits and do the actual wedding after?
• I planned my wedding in 2 months, and we didn't even have a reason like the military, we just didn't want to wait any longer. What started out being only immediate family and the wedding party has turned into 50, but everything has worked out perfectly. I did a lot of online shopping to save time shopping in stores. Our wedding is about 3 hours from home- close enough to drive but far enough to make it sort of "destination." We are having a big party in my parents' backyard two weeks after the wedding. I really wanted to do that since we did limit the ceremony to just close friends or family. I just felt strongly I didn't want my wedding day to be spent making small talk with great aunt so-an-so whom I haven't seen in 5 years anyway. So the seceond reception will be for that.

If I were you, I think I would still invite the two friends you asked to be bridesmaids. It won't be that much more to include them and will avoid any awkwardness and hurt feelings. It's not worth it. My FI and I would probably have eloped except for the fact I couldn't imagine my family and close friends not being there. Don't worry about what others who aren't invited will think- those who love you will understand. Good luck!
• I don't see a problem in inviting more to the reception, as prior military  I certainly understand.

Something to look into, he does NOT have to leave in October, you can have them push it back a few months until the next window if thats something you wanted. The recruiter might not love it, but he can do it.

I am a bit confused though. You are having a outside wedding with only a few people, but want to invite everyone else to dinner later that evening? But then you say this is because they have to travel, but if they are traveling anyway to go to your reception, couldn't you just invite them to both?

Anyway, if it were ME, I would go ahead and invite everyone that we budgeted for and wanted to be there, regardless of the time frame. If you can, look into a hotel block that you can get lower rates on for all your out of town guests. Get the Save The Dates out with hotel block info this week,or if you can get it together soon enough, get the invites out with all the information this week.
• When it comes to the military you live a day by day life, people will understand and it is not offensive at all. When you send out the invitations say something about waiting a long time to share this day with everyone dear to your hearts. People love you  and care about your happiness and what you want is fine with everyone else. Do not stress over it. Enjoy it!
• My situation is similar, but not quite the same. My fiance does construction projects for many bases across the country; the one he is on now has been going on for 10 months and after that he will get a couple weeks off and go somewhere else. This is how we live.
We have been together for 7 years, we have a child, a home, pets, ya know the works. So we decided to have a small intimate ceremony: our parents, grandparents, and our daughter. That weekend, we are hosting a private dinner at our favorite restaurant, the one he proposed at, for our friends and the rest of the family.
I don't find it offensive because everyone knows that we do things our way and we aren't big on all the pomp and circumstance, but we do love good food and family. Plus, he was excited about no dancing. Everything I have read while trying to plan says to make it about us and to incorporate our favorite things. When I tried to plan the big traditional wedding it didn't feel right for us and so this is what we decided.
Don't feel the need to do something because everyone says you should. Plan, on paper, one way and then another and see what feels right to you.
• Well I think that as long as you invite them to a later reception then it would be ok. If your friends and family truely care about you and love you then they will understand! I would do the best I could with the time you have! After all you only have each other for a short time before he leave don't stress over what could be. Or what would people think! Worry about the two of you together! Dont stress! I hope this has helped you. Good luck!
• I think your idea is lovely, and very considerate of your imediate families. A big wedding celebration, is often (though not always) for the guests. This will be for you, in a way you are comfortable with, in a manner that works for your lives. I say go for it.

And you know what? You could have the rception on your 1 year anniversary, and re-new your vows. Or do whatever you want to - it's up to you! Weddings are as different as the people in them - enjoy planning your intimate affair - don't allow others to affect the way you remember this time.

Oh - and congratulations!
I'm not a fan of later and larger receptions unless it is an AHR following a DW. Doing a reception the same day of the intimate ceremony is a bit better.
Posted by Mrs.B6302007
Assuming that AHR and DW mean at-home reception and destination wedding, I don't see how it's okay to have a larger and later reception in that situation and not in this military one.  In fact, I think it's more appropraite in the poster's situation to have an intimate ceremony now and plan for a larger reception later when she has the time to plan for it.  I would not personally be offended as a guest in either situation, but I would be more understanding of the bride who wanted to get married quickly before her fiancee was deployed rather than the one who decided getting married in Jamica was more important than my being there to witness it.
• I think its fine and people should understand. Your reception at a later date will be even more meaningful. :)
• Girl, you do what feels right to you!  I can't believe some of the comments on this board...  This is your day, and you need to do what is right for you and your FI regardless of what ANYONE thinks of it.  Your day will be fabulous no matter what you decide!

• My BF did the exact same thing - she got married at the JOP but now expects to throw some lavish fake ceremony over a year later. I think you should have a come celebrate our marriage party - no gifts or anything. Either way it's not ideal.
image
• I'd recommend sitting down with your FI and figuring out what is most important to both of you right now.  Is it getting married before he leaves? Is it waiting and having a larger wedding later?  Is it getting married sooner, but still figuring out a way to celebrate with extended family and friends?  Once you two are able to figure out what your priorities as a couple are and can communicate those priorities to family and friends, you might find it's easier to move forward with a plan.

IMHO, I don't find it offensive to have a larger celebration after the actual marriage has taken place provided you're not treating the larger celebration as a WEDDING.  If the best option for you and FI is to have a JP marriage now and celebrate later, so be it.

Other people are likely to find fault with WHATEVER plans you choose (this is true of most weddings - not just yours!), the best you can do is go with what's right for you.

Incidentially, www.offbeatbride.com had a piece on this very issue - check it out for some other perspectives and good luck!

• Everyone will understand your special circumstances. I think its a great idea. You get to have a romantic intimate ceremony. And 2 receptions to celebrate your marriage. And your two best friends could still be you bridesmaids and sit at the head table with you at your 2nd celebration. And best of all you can wear your wedding dress twice!
• I don't think it is offensive at all.  Your wedding is about the two of you, so I think you should do what you want and what is most important to you.  I am doing a very small destination wedding and the future mother-in-law was not happy about her family not being there, but eventually she realized that it is what we want and that's most important.  We are also having a ceremony afterwards for everyone to celebrate with us.

Many people skip ceremonies and just go to the reception anyway.  Many guests will enjoy having just a party to attend! :)  Have a videographer there to capture the special moment and share that at the reception!

Good luck and I salute your Fiance!  :)
• I dont think this is offensive at all if this is what you want to do, its your wedding and it is really about you and your guy. Take it from a girl is the same situation the military has a way of making you feel like anything can change at any moment. Your friends should just be happy for you! its your wedding day! Most people in there 20's are happy yo celebrate for any reason so your reception will be a blast.
• I have some friends who just went through something like this. He just graduated from Navy training school (or however that works) and is going to be moving to a base down south this month and they wanted to have the wedding before that so they could both live together down there, so they put together a big wedding in like two months. It turned out really nice and they were both really happy, though I'd imagine it'd be pretty stressful putting everything together in such a short time. Anyway, it worked for them so if it's what you want I'm sure it could work for you!
• I went through the same issue and have to do a similar plan (immediate family, sunset wedding, celebration afterward with extended fam and friends).

I had a friend cry at the notion of not being a part of our wedding but she felt better (as well as extended family) when I said that we'd renew our vows in front of everyone before we begin the later-planned celebration. It will cost slightly more to stage a renewal on top of everything else but at least everyone will feel that they were a part of something special!!! (In the end you have to do what is best and the least stressful for you two).

I hope this helps. You have company out there in cyberspace!
