sprained ankle & 3 days til I DO...

Looking for some advice on how to get through the big day with a severely sprained ankle.  It's been iced and elevated for a day and a half.  I've gone to the ER and have meds to control swelling, but am worried about enjoying the wedding I spent 18 months planning?  Any thoughts???

  • Boo on that! I sprained my ankle a few weeks ago, and it still hurts if I step wrong. I'm sorry. The thing about icing though, is that you don't need to do it for more than 20 minutes at a time. Apparently, it does more harm than good if you ice it for really extended periods of time. (Take this with a grain of salt, I read it on the internet, but from a reputable site.) Good luck!

  • Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.  Something like an Ace bandage could help keep swelling down.  And flats... definitely invest in a comfy pair of flats.

You're already taking pain/swelling meds, so honestly there's not much more you can do. I'd probably plan to take lots of breaks from dancing, and sit down whenever possible (maybe take some cute pics sitting in the grass, on a wall, whatever.

<div>This is true. I did sports medicine for a while, and we never iced anyone for more than 20 minutes. 20 on, 20 off, 20 on, 20 off, etc. If you can sleep with it elevated above your heart, do that too. We used to recommend that athletes put their legs up on a suitcase or something to help keep their legs up high enough. Advil is the best pain reliever and inflammatory medicine for it, too. Keep it wrapped as much as possible in a brace that both supports your ankle and presses on the swelling some. And stay off it as best you can. </div><div>
</div><div>I hope your swelling goes down and the pain goes away soon! Have a beautiful wedding, and good luck! <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /></div>

  • TIFFANY!  Check your PMs.
  • Oh No!!! I would even go a step further then flats and buy a pair of white sneakers that support your ankle.  Decorate them with cute ribbons and things.  Then you won't have to worry about walking and dancing, and the ace bandage or air brace (had one of those too!) won't be as obvious!!

    Good luck and post pics!!

  • forget those little ice bags, you need a bucket. put a bunch of ice in it and fill the rest with cold water and stick your ankle in there for 20 minutes. it sucks, but it goes numb after about 5 minutes so it doesn't hurt much after that. i have severely bad ankles and when i sprain them (which is often) i do the bucket a few times a day. i'm usually good in a day or two.
  • Oh no!! Well I was going to say exactly what all these ladies said. Stay of it as much as you can, ice it, wear the airbrace, wear tennis shoes or flats at the wedding (or the brace even), and wrap that sucker good! :( I hope it fees better soon.
