Am I the only one who hadn't heard of a dollar dance before reading the boards?

Re: Am I the only one who hadn't heard of a dollar dance before reading the boards?

  • I'm debating on doing a dollar dance since it is kind of popular in our area. I think it's a bit tacky, but my BFF had one at her wedding and everyone had a lot of fun. As the MOH, I wore this apron (which was horrifying...but that's another story...) and collected the cash. The guests form 2 lines, a bride line and a groom line and it's a competition to see who generates more cash between the bride and the groom. It was pretty fun because the groom's friends had clearly done this a time or two and started tying up bills into little balls and knots. I'm not sure if the newlyweds actually got all of them untied or not, but still funny to watch!

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Am I the only one who hadn't heard of a dollar dance before reading the boards? : Me too. It was an out of town wedding for me too. You expect me to drive out of town, pay for a hotel, buy a gift and NOT get fed? I don't THINK so. Speaking of horror stories: I drove in the snow an hour and a half to a wedding shower-was the only non-family there besides the MOH (none of her other bridesmaids showed up) and I bought a $25 gift because this was her second shower and we still had the wedding. She opened it, said, "Is this it?" Her family looked at me like I was the a-hole. Never got a thank you, never got a thank you card for any of my three gifts.

Well, thanks! And I think you're on the right track. Your post had just enough seriousness to make me think it might be real which is an important element when pointing out the ridiculousness in others.

Haha! It's much easier to pull that off when I don't post often.

  • Yeah. You're mysterious.

So, why don't you post often?
  • In the greek tradition we call this a dollar dance, but it has nothing to do with asking people for money, or announcements or anything.

During the first dance, and throughout the wedding, family and friends come up to you and throw money. The money ends up covering the floor and stays there the whole time. Its big in my family. I guess its not technically a 'dollar dance', but we call it that.

Here is a video of what Im talking about.

  • I'm more of an observer than a posting type of person. I love reading the posts of people who are trying to get sympathy and the ladies just eat them alive. It completely makes my work day go faster.

But when I do post, it's normally something good (hence the $50 make believe "do not play" list fee).
  • Well, nice to meet you, Skin. :)
  • Nice to meet you too Cew! BTW your dress looks awesome! I hope you had a fantastic wedding!!
  • Thank you so much! I did have a fantastic wedding. Everything was just beyond perfect. I'm actually shocked that it went so well.

When is your wedding? I'm too lazy to look at your profile. ;)

  • It's good that you're too lazy to look at my profile because there isn't a lot there!!

My wedding is June 19 (yeah, freakin' 25 days away). I just honestly want to get it over with!!
  • I saw it at one wedding before- but I thought it was a cultural thing since the couple was first generation American and most of the wedding wasn't in English. They had many traditions I didn't recognize. I didn't judge them for the $ dance (not actually sure if it was a culture thing- but I will give them the benefit of the doubt).

If I saw this in a typical American couple doing it solely for the $ - I would judge!

This is exactly how I felt for the last month of my wedding. I was so sick of wedding bullshit by that point, that I just wanted to be done.
  • Where did you guys go for your honeymoon?

The worst part is that I'm so incredibly OCD about everything that I won't let the FI help me AT ALL!! We both love baseball (it's an obsession really) and so instead of table numbers, we are naming the tables after baseball teams and using pennants instead of numbers. Well, his idea was to just use a regular table number holder and put the pennant in there. Yeah, that's not good enough for me, so instead I'm making 17 mini baseball fields, with the foul pole holding the pennant.

Sorry for the rant, but I just realized I have like 12 more to do!!!

  • Oh wow. That sounds really cool. A fuckton of work, but still really cool. When we first started planning, I had so many ideas, but I realized that I suck the nut when it comes to execution and that biting off too much would just cause me to go into full on terror mode. From the beginning, I wanted to do cotton candy as favors, but about 2 months out, I scrapped the idea because I was just too lazy and overwhelmed to pull it off. So, I really admire any one who can DIY anything and it sounds like your baseball fields will be adorable. Do you have any pics?

We went to Mexico for our HM. We stayed at Excellence Playa Mujeres and it was the most amazing resort I've ever been to. I wish I lived there. Here's a picture of our roof top private pool. Don't hate.

  • Ok first of all, a roof top private pool is amazingly badass. That looks SO amazing!! I'm glad you had a great time!!

What did you end up using as favors since you didn't do the cotton candy?

This is the only pic I have of the fields. LOL ignore the messy table! Honestly, the hardest part has been getting all the materials. My town is small and only has one Michaels store and I bought all their foam blocks!! I still need 6 more!!

  • Those are so cute. I would never be able to do something that cool.

The only favors we had were coozies. I had planned on not having any (and never really loved the idea of coozies as wedding favors), but my MIL got them on her own and really wanted to give them out, so beer apparel it was!

Alright, I'm off to bed. It's been great talking with you. Hopefully, you'll be less of an observer from now on and more of a poster. :) Keep me posted on your fields.
  • Have a great night!! Awesome chatting with you!

P.S. there's nothing wrong with beer apparel!!! ;-)

CEW, I am soooo jealous! That was my number ONE choice for our honeymoon! I loooooved the pool on the roof. It just really wasn't in our budget, so we scaled back a bit. I told him I want to go there in the future for sure though! I'm glad to hear it was as nice as it looks!
  • The first time I saw a dollar dance I asked my Mom about it and she said it was a good luck/good fortune thingie. I dunno.

I'd never heard of a tiered wedding reception.... is it what I think it is, cause Google was useless for an answer.

We got really lucky and booked our HM while the swine flu scare was at it's height. We got a really great deal. What sucks is that we'll likely have to wait 10 years to go back again because it's so expensive.

From what I understand, the tiered reception is just that - you have certain guests invited to the whole thing (including dinner), then there are other guests invited just for the drink/party portion. Rude.

Or you don't invite people to the ceremony because you don't have room for them but you still invite them to the reception. Or, you invite tons of people to the ceremony but then not to the reception.
  • They are pretty common where I grew up in PA - always thought they were just standard to every wedding because I had never been to a wedding that DIDN'T do them until I moved here to VA.
