XP: Are you using a cake topper?

Hi ladies,

I haven't decided if we're going with a cake topper yet... either just fresh flowers (orchids) or a wooden couple... however, the wooden couples i've seen on Etsy are soooo expensive... like $65 and up... we're paying for our own wedding, so all these little things add up... I also haven't seen one that i really have to have yet...

so...are you going to use a cake topper and which one?

  • We're using a blingged out letter R for our new last name. I paid $30 for it online.

  • We saw one topper we liked but it would have cost us about 70 all said and done. I decided (FI always says go for it if you like it). To me on a tight budget it wasn't worth it. Our cake had a few dahlias and hydrangeas on the tiers but left the top simple. I was happy with it.

  • We didn't.  Couldn't find one we liked.

  • We just did flowers.

  • We aren't. The cake we've ordered comes with a cutout that gets attached to the top tier and stis slightly above the top of the cake. To add a topper would be odd I think.

  • We'll be using one. One of FI's co-workers is an expert at carving figurines (he has carved whole themed chess sets), so he is carving a cake topper to look like us dressed as Han Solo and Princess Leia. We plan to keep it on display after the wedding. :)
  • Our caterer made this cake topper (fondant), we were married in a car museum so it fit us well.

  • Our cake baker is making us an edible "M" (last name) that will go on top. It comes with the price of the cake. If it wasn't free we probably would have gone the flower route.

  • We had a relative make wooden love birds for us.  They sat atop the cake (obviously) with mini white carnations.  We kinda had a bird theme. They were on our invitations, reply cards, escort cards etc

  • We had fresh flowers on top, the same flowers that were between the tiers of the cake.
  • I bought the cheesy one where the bride is squeezing the grooms butt. We think its funny.

  • I also made our own wooden people cake topper:

Less than $20 total, including paints and brushes
  • I didn't have one mostly because I am cheap.

I might have done flowers if I had a florist, but I DIY'd those and didn't really know what to do for cake.

  • I was going to do a simple one, but when I saw this one online it reminded me so much of us. I had to have it, it will have a nice home next to all our wedding memorabilia in a curio cabinet for a lovely display. Its bone china, and is hand painted, its sooooo beautiful!

  • Our (genius) cake baker is creating an edible floral topper out of heated sugar, gold balls and fondant maybe? I saw it at another wedding of hers and I thought they were real flowers...the bride corrected me and we stole a taste!

I changed that vision a bit, but we are using an edible topper.

  • We had fresh flowers, I couldn't find a topper I really liked and H didn't care.

  • Oh Jane I love your pic in the street! Are you in New Orleans?

  • Our cake topper was my favorite wedding related thing.

    I'm not good at feelings.

Thanks! Yeup, we had our DW there. We just couldn't picture it anywhere else, and were engaged there. It was the best weekend.

[QUOTE]We got one and love it! I'll admit that it was more of a splurge item, costing about $40 bucks. However, it was very 'us' and it sits on display on our bookshelf. :)

They are hedgehog toppers. I've already posted a link. It should be on the first page of this thread. They came from an Etsy seller though :)

  • Yes, we ordered this one:

I love how it looks and I found it for the lowest price on that website.

  • My FI really wants a bride and groom on top, but I've yet to find one that I like. I'll probably go with flowers or a monogram W unless I find something that I like.

  • Thanks for the ideas, ladies! As of now, i think, i'll stick with orchids on my cake... if i dont see any cake toppers that throw my socks off! :)

  • We had a custom made topper.  I hadn't seen one I liked until I found Anacrafts on etsy.  It was a splurge item but we currently have it on our bookshelves.

  • No topper. Just flowers.
  • We didn't have a topper either. Just a bouquet of sugar anemones.

We were going to get a custom topper from The Lollipop Workshop on Etsy, but they were out of our price range, and we liked the look of the flowers better.

  • I got a wood letter from craftyeddy, then painted it and added pearls to it and it cost me around $20 to make. I think it was $14 for the letter and the pearls I got on clearance at Michaels. :)
