My credit card was stolen

Everything is fine - but it's so weird.

This morning I got a call from someone at my card company. The asked information and said my name wrong, so I told them I would look into my account and call them back if something looked weird.

Logged in - stuff was weird.

Called back (never want to give information to someone over the phone when you really don't know who they are)! and apparently: someone took my card at some point (or saw it for a semi-extended period of time) and either memorized the numbers or wrote them down. They didn't have the actual card (I still had it) and it wasn't stolen from an internet purchase since they ONLY information they had was the numbers.

They went to a hotel and then had $800 worth of fun at Best Buy. Best Buy apparently declined the charge thinking something was up (that's pretty cool - wonder how that happened?)

My card will remove the other charges, and we had to go through some recent/past purchases to show what was mine and what wasn't.

I had to then say that sadly, the $1800 charge to the bridal salon was indeed real and not the thief having fun trying on dresses......

  • Bummer! Good thing it was caught early though.

  • I've had my card stolen a few times. Once actually out of my parent's mail box. It was a renewal card.

It was probably someone at a restaurant or something that was able to hold onto your card for a while.

    Luckily it was caught!

I have had my stuff stolen before and have always had good experiences with the credit card companies.  Word to the wise - the credit card laws in the US are more advanced than debit card laws.  Always use a CC and not a DC for online purchasing.  You have more protections if someone gets ahold of your info.

  • Ick!  Luckily you've got some smart people over at the company looking out for you.  Hopefully it's all resolved quickly.
    S'mores. Just S'mores please.
  • Wow, that sucks. I hope you get it all taken care of soon.
  • Yikes! Sounds like you have a pretty good bank though. I am so unhappy with mine right now but I can't decide if I want to just wait until after getting married or switch now.

  • Thanks everyone - it is all sorted out, but it's still a bit annoying!
