I just got a call that my dress is in (yay!), but I'm not getting married until October and in the meantime I'm working on losing weight and toning. The shop said that if I came in to try it on, they could see what alterations are needed--should I wait on going in until late July/August-ish so that I have more time to see the results of my hard work? Or should I be going in now?

Planning Bio-Updated 3/11 with groomsmen attire
Even if the dress is too big or too small I suggest u see someone and preferably not an alterations place at a cleaner or any Place that says alterations. I would defintely get a seamstress that does only Bridal wear. Go for a consultation at least 2 months before your date.
