[QUOTE]Me and my fiance will be having both the bouqet and garter toss at our wedding. He will be taking one of my garters off with his teeth and the guests who caught the garter and bouquet will dance together.

This would creep a lot of people out- save it for the bedroom.

  • Retread - we won't know until we see who catches the bouqet and garter. I have seen this done at afew weddings and it's not like we're putting a gun to their heads and forcing them to dance but it's a fun way make our wedding more enjoyable/entertaining.

Owning - It's a tradition that I plan on continuing where the groom to remove the garter with his teeth. In the majority of the weddings I have attended I honestly cannot recall a single one where I heard guests being creeped out by the groom using his teeth.

Forcing, or "encouraging" or "suggesting", that the two catchers dance together does not sound enjoyable for anyone involved but you [only exception being if they were already a couple]. And do you really not believe that anyone finds it weird for the groom to go up her dress with his teeth? Just because no one expressed their discomfort to YOU does not mean anything.

The last wedding I was at where they took the garter off with his teeth, everyone at my table was extremely uncomfortable. And I've had multiple family members tell me they would leave the wedding if FI did that at ours.

Just b/c they didn't say that to you, doesn't mean the didn't feel that way. I think that is inappropriate in a public place, especially at a wedding- where there might be kids (not sure if you having kids there or not). It is not classy and no one will think it is. It is very trampy. If you want to come off as trampy go ahead- I am trying to save you from embarrassment. Just b/c it's a tradition, doesn't mean you should continue it.

I agree with the PP, I'd leave the wedding if i saw this.

  • I guess there are a few more people with negative thoughts about the garter toss. Each to their own...

  • Sorry I worded that wrong. It isn't something that everyone looks at as a "tradtition" but growing up with my family/community it was something that was done and I would like to continue it.

  • I agree with the majority of PP. It definately depends on your crowd. I've been to weddings where they've done both, where they've only done the bouquet toss, and where they're done neither. I personally dislike the garter toss, so I'm not doing it (although my grandma for some reason really wants me to because she keeps asking me about my nonexistent garter...). I like the bouquet toss, but I hate it when people are forced up there. So I'm just going to have our band annouce it and whoever comes onto the dance floor for the toss comes up. I'm not going to round up people.
  • I really don't know where this tradition comes from, but I'm not upset to see it die out.
  • I recently went to a wedding for a close friend and her little sister caught the bouquet and her uncle caught the garter. The DJ made the uncle put it on the younger sister's(who is 16) leg. I was so creeped out that I would never have one.

[QUOTE]We skipped them. Nearly all of our guests were married. We did an anniversary dance and my toss bouquet went to the longest married couple.

    What a cute idea!

[QUOTE]I'm not a fan. When I was single I really didn't like everyone at my table insisting I go jump around like being the next one to get married is like winning the lotto (desperate much?) and I cringe everytime some poor friend of the bride is cluching the chair she is on, grinning and bearing it, while some strange man sticks his all too eager hand up her skirt. No thanks. We skipped it.

Fiance really wants to have a garter toss, but we've put rules on it. rule #1 is no taking it off with his teeth (my grandparents would have a heart attack), rule #2 is that no one is forced to join in, even if they are single, and rule #3 is that the garter does not get put on the leg of the girl who catches th bouquet. That's just too awkward for me.
