Aprove--you reminded me, FI and I know a few people who chase our cats and do things purposefully to scare them, and it drives me batty. I want to ask if they've ever been around an animal--seriously, that's not the way to do it. I'm definitely more likely to judge a person by how they act with my cats, than by how the cats act with them. Posted by saxy414
Spot on.
Also, I probably should have clarified that I'd only give up my pets for a move if the actual move would be a hardship on them - like health-wise. FI is British and we'll move back to the US at some point, or maybe even elsewhere, and while I've flown my kittehs from US to Dubai to England so far without problems (aside from their being miffed at being locked in a carrier, hah), there might come a point where that would be too much for them. I'd ask a friend or family member to take them on for me, and I'd provide for their care as well.
Do you use your animal's reactions to judge people? Not really. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to who my pets like and who they don't. It's kind of embarrassing, if anything.
Would you ever date/marry someone if your animal didn't like them, or they didn't like your pet? Yes, I did! Wes and my cat Rex hated each other at first. It was quite comical. He was also allergic to him and I didn't get rid of him. But he knew how much I loved Rex, and he came home to be with me when Rex died and went to my dad's house with me to bury him and cried right along with me. It was kind of like KW's story about Scott.
Would you ever give up your pet because of kids or moving? I don't think I would, but I guess you never know until you are faced with the decision. I have very strong and possibly unpopular opinions about children and pets. I think if you are born and come home to a house that already has pets, you develop antibodies that prevent you from developing allergies to them. Everyone I know who is allergic to pets was born into a home without them. I have no scientific basis for this theory. If I'm wrong, well, there are shots and other treatments for allergies. You can't go through life in a bubble. I also think that pets welcome the new baby into the pack because they know it's their master's offspring. I wouldn't test this theory with a dog breed that has historically been violent, but then again, I wouldn't own one anyway.
As far as moving, I would never move somewhere I couldn't take my pets.
oh Do you use your animal's reactions to judge people? sure do i really do believe they can tell - my one cat HATED my grandpa first time my grandpa was able to get close enough he grabbed my cat by the back of the neck and shook it cause he hissed at him - yeah not a fan of that guy Would you ever date/marry someone if your animal didn't like them, or they didn't like your pet? honestly probably not i do home visits for placing fosters in my group and you can tell A LOT about people by how they treat and act with an animal, and how the animal acts...the dogs can sense things we can't obviously if my fosters buddies up for belly rubs and is comfortable it's a great fit (knock on wood I am 100% all the dogs adopted have worked out well and none have come back!) at the same time someone that doesn't interact with the pet - it's weird...and hell my fiance is with me and knows the dog stuff i do, he proposed AFTER I was doing the rescue bit so he is a keeper! Would you ever give up your pet beacuse of kids or moving? oh hell no...when we adopted laila the brat in my siggy...she was good wtih kids, we don't have kids but she is a lifetime committment and eventually there will be kids..in the mean time i keep her interacting with kids and i desensitize her...basically give her those slap/pets that little kids do, tug he ears and tail...lips too, mess with her mouth because let's face it...kids to it and she tolerates it from me and knows it's "natural" so we should be good in a few years when a kid is on the way...

i was and you can work around it....actually i am allergic to dogs too and i rescue them takes me about a week to get used to the new dander and i am golden...i think when i was little i had more problems because everyone tried to keep me away from stuff i was allergic to but like the dumb shots (that didnt work) being exposed has helped over the years
Some cats are low dander--we got a Bengal this time around for that reason and people who are usually allergic to cats are fine around her. Isn't Demon part Maine Coon? I think they are also low dander.
And ditto, Jelenny. Wes sucked it up around Rex and eventually Rex's presence didn't bother him as much. As long as we could keep Rex off our bed, he was fine.
I'm not sure what she is, but her fur is definitely more hairy than furry (doesn't matt, isn't fluffy so much, very similar to human hair) which could have something to do with it.
The easy version of allergies is just that your body develops an allergy when it comes across something it isn't used to and therefore decides is bad for it. That's why a lot of people say it's not good for little kids (over 3 months) to remain inside sterile environments where there is no exposure.
I know I was exposed to a bunch of things when I was little. I played in puddles, made (and probably ate) mud pies, and always went to zoos, petting farms, etc. I have yet to find something I'm allergic too (including poison ivy) *knock on wood*. My niece is only 4 but was kept in a antibiotic soap, don't let her jump in mud environment and she's already allergic to pollen, dander, peanuts, etc.
