Will you upgrade your engagement ring?

So, I'm not sure what's up with my coworkers, but I had one tell me that she upgraded her engagement ring twice in less than five years.  So, are you planning to upgrade in the next 5 years?

Re: Will you upgrade your engagement ring?

  • My ring is not small, nor big (3/4 carat solitaire on a really big ring size). Upgrading is not that important to me, but I might do it eventually.  I can't image upgrading so soon.  I think FI would kill me.
  • I got it reset earlier this year because the metal (platinum) was too soft and had too many dings in it. I would like to get it reset again in the future, but I'll be keeping my diamond.

  • Never gonna upgrade.  Later on DH will buy me a diamond band if I want to be more blingy but there's no reason for me to get a bigger e-ring, mine's plenty big enough.
  • You should have made it "Hell yes".  I don't know when, but it will happen.  Hopefully within the next couple of years.  I wanted a diamond, but H got me a ruby instead.  He's not happy with it- I'm not happy with it.
  • My FI talked about upgrading my ring on a huge anniversary later in life.  I would always keep this one though.
  • No.  Never.

I don't like bigger stones than what I have.  They look obnoxious on my hand and I chose the size I have because it's perfect the way it is.

I'd never want to change the ring he gave me at that period in our lives--I'm too sentimental.

  • My setting was free with the diamond, so he is planning on upgrading the quality of the setting when we get married. (white gold to platinum)

I want to upgrade to a Past (current diamond) , Present, Future ring  in 10 years. He knows I love expensive jewelry & is completely ok with giving each other nice gifts.

I won't ever upgrade; my engagement ring was my grandmom's (made in the 1930's) and I love it.

I should also mention that if my ring was changed, my mother and aunt would come after me with torches, but luckily I'm too sentimental to alter it in any way.
  • Mine is a fakey mcfakerson, so yes- I love the setting, but we'll gradually stick real diamonds in there (it's a 3 stone).

Haha. I downgraded the setting (platinum to white gold) because I am way too clumsy and was hitting the ring on everything. It had so many dings and scratches, so we had it reset to a harder metal.

Yep.  I didn't know that it was common here in NYC.
  • FI has expressed that he wants to upgrade my diamond later. I love it, but there are pretty noticible specks in it (you can't see them from above, but whenever I rest my chin on my hand I see them). I really don't mind, because I'm so glad he didn't break the bank buying it. However, if it really means a lot to him, I wouldn't say no to getting another stone of the same size and having the current stone made into half of a pair of earrings someday :)
  • Nope, I picked out my ring. I love it. It's vintage, so I'm sure it will continue to last for a long time. It's also plenty big enough. Not HUGE, but I don't wear a lot of jewelery, so having a 5 carat diamond would look really odd on me. And this one is special. Since the setting is antique, I wouldn't want to upgrade it. The setting is as important as the stone, to me. And it symbolizes our engagement. It's not just a piece of jewelery. It represents a part of our life together.

FMIL doesn't wear her e-ring anymore, but she sort of replaced it with her mother's 50th anniversary ring. (FI was supposed to inherit his grandma's original e-ring, but it was stolen.) It's a huge diamond on a plain gold band. But the color is really off. The only good thing about it is that it's huge. But if FMIL's mother was anything liker her, I'm not surprised that she wanted to upgrade, as did FMIL.

  • Thank you Goldie.  I love vintage rings too. :)

And Julez -- your ring is absolutely stunning!
  • My niece got a 2 carat diamond when she got engaged.  4 years later she upgraded it to a 3 carat when their first child was born and had the 2 carat set in a necklace

    IMO, a bit much
  • I LOVE my ring, and am planning on wearing it as my wedding ring-it would look weird w/ a band. With that in mind, I will probably get a bigger center stone put in before the wedding, and have the existing stone put into a necklace for the wedding.

    Thanks, Goldlie and Teresa!

EDIT: Teresa, our rings are like cousins.  Mine's from the 30s too.  But, no great family history like yours.
  • No need for an "upgrade" here.  The ring I got was perfect for me.  That said, if he should ever want to buy me more jewelry, I'll always accept Kiss

  • Never! I love my delicate sapphire ring, and it fits my skinny witch fingers perfectly. FI bought me the perfect ring, and I'd never want to exchange it for something else.

Haha, I love it -- I believe my grandfather actually bought it in NY, so that's a definite possibility.  And while your ring might not have family history, I'd bet there's a great history behind it.  I think that's my favorite part of vintage rings -- romanticizing the stories of previous owners.

  • Most likely not. I love my e-ring the way it is. However, bc of the razor edge, we had to go with two rings (one on either side) to match rather than one, so there's not much more you can upgrade to that. It's blingy by itself.
  • Never Ever. Ever. He picked it out on his own, and it was exactly what he wanted me to have. Its platinum, so i will have to get it polished more often, but I love it and wouldn't change anything about it. But then again I am not a big jewelry person in the first place, so I see no reason to adorn my hand any more than it is. Like a PP said, it will be my wedding ring too.

  • hell no. not possible, anyway.
  • You'll have to pry this ring off my stone cold, deader than hell finger. He picked it out with my daughter, bought it and gave it to me to ask me to marry him. It's on that finger until the day I die. It's perfect, and it's my engagement ring. No other ring will ever be an upgrade. This one's too valuable to me.

Now the RIGHT hand, well that's a different story entirely. He can decorate that hand however he likes. :)
  • OP, have you ever noticed that women on the subway seem to e waring two wedding bands?  That's because they turn their rings so the diamond is on the inside

If you have to do that, it's too damn big!

Yes I have.  I couldn't imagine walking around, taking the buses and subways with a big honking rock.  But that's just me.  I don't have anything against those who like more bling.
  • Oot...we got engaged in NYC and I wore my ring backwards for the rest of the trip when we were on the subway!

My H got me a ring almost 3 times bigger than I had hoped for, so definitely no upgrade.  He said he did it because he knows I don't really wear jewelry and it was the only expensive piece he would ever have to buy.
