Bridesmaids picking their own dresses...

Anyone else doing this? I have 4 girls who are all different shapes, sizes, and heights. They would NOT look good in the same dress. I supplied a fabric swatch (don't worry, it's a big one =D) and let them know they can pick their own as long as they all match in formality and length. Frankly, I just didn't want to deal with it. Expecially since they all have different figures and budgets. Plus, they could wear them again if they picked it out.

Does anyone have pictures from your wedding? Particulary knee length (ish) turquoise, or any blue, really. But I would love to see them all. I'm trying to describe it to FI but he just can't picture how it would look. All of the pictures I have found were other colors/lengths and he just can't picture it.

Thanks girls!

  • I am doing this for my wedding...I have girls from size 00-20...it isn't fair for them to all be in the same dress.  I want them to be as comfortable as they can.  I chose the color, material and designer...they picked the dress that they felt great in....when they feel great in something everyone will look better!

  • My bridesmaids are all wearing convertible dresses with the bandeau tops under.  I was debating doing what you are, but honestly I worry what my crunchy hippy sister would try to pull off.

I think it depends on the formality of the wedding.  For something more formal I would give them a color and fabric and have them pick whatever style they want from David's Bridal or Alfred Angelo (although those can be tough to rewear) if its a more casual wedding (like my afternoon farm wedding) then I love the slightly mismatched dress style, and your girls will thank you for letting them pick something they can rewear.
  • My girls all picked a different long chiffon eggplant colored dress from Amsale.  Worked out well because there is no way one dress would flatter them all!  Here's a photo of a bride & her BMs that picked dresses in the same color that we're having.

  • I wanted to do this, but all the gals were actually insistent they wear the same dress. It was weird.
  • Mine all picked their own dress from David's Bridal. I wanted them to wear the same color, fabric, and length so DB was the best option.  DB also carries a lot of different sizes to there ended up being something for everyone. There are plently of people on TK that do this.  I'm sure you can find a pic here!

  • I told mine to pick out any gray, knee length, non-shiny dress. I thought I was being SUPER flexible and undemanding, but it still took them months to get dresses- One of them still hasn't gotten hers yet. Sometimes I think they would've done better with me just telling them what to wear.

So as long as you have a little patience, go for it ;)

  • Other: I went with my girls and helped pick with them. I knew I wanted long, chiffon dresses, but I didn't care if they were exactly the same. They tried on all of Amsale's like that, and they ended up each getting the same long, crinkle chiffon, charcoal dress except one has a sweetheart top, and one has a one shouldered top.

  • I did this.  I don't have prof pictures yet.  It was really convient. I used DB since we are all over the place.  I picked the color and told them it should probably be long since it was a winter wedding.  Each girl got to look for a dress in:
    A) their budget
    B)their style
    C) their body shape and size

I believe the girls really appreciated it.
  • I checked their budgets and had them all pick something short and lapis from David's Bridal in one of their shinier fabrics. Seems to be working out so far.

  • I don't have any pictures but I am doing this also.  One has already picked hers out and I am going tomorrow with the other two for them to pick theirs.  I think it is a great way to have variety in your photos and let them be comfortable all at the same time.  Good choice!
  • I voted yes.

I picked designer, length, color and fabric. They had about 15 dresses to choose from. If you are having the girls pick a certain color, I would pick a designer so they are actually the right color, unless you don't mind.

  • I don't have pictures yet, becuase my wedding is in 2 1/2 months, but that's what we're doing.  I have 3 BM, including my MOH, and they all got to pick their dress styles, as long as they were the same length, and they all ordered in the same color.  I had them stand together in their picks (different colors at that time, but I got an idea of how the styles looked together) and it will be absolutely fine.  One of the dresses is satin, and the other 2 are chiffon and they look fine together.  I know some people think different fabrics look weird, but I thought it looked fine.

I suppose if I was having a more formal wedding I might consider putting everyone in the same dress.

  • I was going to let mine pick theirs, but they looked for a few days and decided that they couln't find anything that they liked and that went with my preffernces and sorta matched eachother, so I have decided on convertable dresses from victoria secret, tho I don't know if i will dye the ones they have or hire a seamstress to make them in the right color. But they all love the dresses and the idea of them because they can wear them again
  • we only have one female attendant and we'll be letting her choose whatever she wants to wear. we'll give her the color pallette and let her run free. :)

Same with me. I suggested some options and they all loved the same dress!

  • I'm doing this. My bridesmaids range from size 4 to 26(ish) and we're going with short, non-shiny dresses from DB. Easy peasy :)
  • My best friend chose to do this for her wedding in August of 2011.

Each of us went in to our local Alfred Angelo boutique. Her only requirements were that the dresses be short in length, in a satin fabric and in her choice of color. Since we ranged in size from 2-18, it really was for the best. Not only did we all feel really comfortable in the dresses we chose, but we also had a nice formal dress that we could easily wear again in the future.

I say allow them to choose. Luckily for me, my friend has similar taste so I know I would've loved my dress either way, but this allowed us all to really enjoy the day, including what we wore.
  • I asked my girls to wear long, black dresses....I have new mothers, tall, short, thin, curvy and all live in different areas...black is black in photos and I have one group of grateful bridesmaids that are actually having fun shopping picking out something to reflect their style!
