PW: need birthday present advice

What do I get my nephew for his first birthday? He needs no toys because SIL and her MIL buy the kid whatever the hell they want. He doesn't need clothes because again, SIL and her MIL just buy the kid whatever whenever. I'd give books but I'm pretty sure reading is not really a priority for them and I'm not into giving gifts that sit in corners unused.

I'm honestly thinking money. And a box. Because most kids like things like boxes. Hell, give the Chubbs some tissue paper and you've got a good hour of fun right there.

I'd get a toybox or a potty chair or a leash or something toddlers need.

Freakonomics found that having books in the home, even if they were never read, was statistically related to higher academic performance.  However, I think it was because the parents at least had read books at some point, and/or recognized their value.  Sounds like that's not the case here.

    Short answer:  cash sounds good.

I know I posted this once before, but whenever I think of babies and books, I think of when DH and I sent Niece a ton of books for her first Christmas, and her idiot father said, "I'm sure she'll enjoy these when she learns to read."

    Savings bond.

Heff that story makes me want to cry.  I can't wait to read to my son.

DD LOVES her books.  DH and I are both readers, so we figured she might be, but I had no idea just how much she would enjoy them.

Fortunately, Niece is turning out a lot smarter than her father.

I've been compiling a list of books for the baby's library.  I can't wait.

A flashlight.  For real they have these fun animal or train flashlights that 6let goes nuts for at his cousins.  We found a Thomas the Train on clearance at Walmart that he's going to love.

    http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dtoys-and-games&field-keywords=animal+flashlight

You can find them much cheaper in stores, but this is the idea.

I'd still get books. Maybe the kid will pick them up adn the parents will take a hint.  A book is never a bad thing to have in the house. (Go for board books - we've pretty much had to shelve anything with paper pages.)

Cash sounds good, but I'm sometimes afraid to do this with bad parents - that they'll use it to buy crap for themselves instead of putting it away for the kid's education.
