Fi got his ring...do they stretch

So FI got sized a 9 and ordered his ring. He loves it but he said the 9 he got feels a lot tighter than the 9s he tried on. I told him I thought its just cause its brand new and the others had been tried on a million times. Is this true though? Do they stretch? Its platinum if that makes a diff. He still thinks the 9.5 will be too big but is concerned the 9 he got is pretty tight.

Thanks!

Re: Fi got his ring...do they stretch

  • there can  be a few factors. Weather is a big factor I know that when it's cold my fingers seam to "srenk' a very little and makes my ring lose.

In hot weather it fits better and if my hand is swollen ring feels really tight.

when he tried on the other rings was the weather diffrent then it is now? that could be a factor.

Call the Place where you got the ring and ask them?

  • I have never heard of a ring stretching from being tried on a lot of times. Sometimes metal will wear away after YEARS of being worn everyday...but I don't think his ring is going to magically stretch. Take it to a jeweler and have them stretch it a bit. He shouldn't even have to go up a half size. They can probably do quarter sizes.
  • Yeah, it's not going to stretch enough for him to be able to notice it. Most likely what happened is that it was not sized exactly, as in its really close to a 9 but maybe a little under. Take it back to them and get them to check the size and possibly re-do it.
  • we got it on blue nile and it was sized 2 days ago at a different jeweler and then he ordered the same ring (cheaper) on blue nile. I guess I just thought a 9 was a 9, not matter what.

    Thanks ladies!
  • Yah its likely just his fingers, different times of day can make your fingers more swollen or less swollen. When I first wake up my ring is snug and then throughout the day as my fingers cool off it gets a little looser. Just have the jeweler stretch it a little for him, they can do that without completely re-sizing it.
  • You can take to any local jeweler & they can size it for a cost. Not sure how much, that would vary.  You can get 1/4 sizes.  I was sized a 5, I told the guy I thought it would be too small amd asked for a 5.25 and it still was too tight.  My hands do swell in different temps and the 5.25 was actaully cutting into my hand when I took it back to resize it.  Its no a 5.5.  When we ordered our bands, I got a 5.75 since mine wedding band is thicker than my e-ring. Its fits perfect!  Same thing for FI, they sized him an 11, we ordered an 11.25 and it fits perfect.

  • Metal can wear down but after a loooong time- like around my parents 30th anniversary my did needed to have gold added to "build up" his worn down ring. But that was after 30 years of continuous wear. Most likely its from his fingers swelling. If you don't wear rings normally and aren't used to how they should fit my jeweler recommended being sized on a cold day and a hot day and figure out the average size that you need to be comfortable.

Yea, a 9 is not always a 9.  The U.S. has different sizing standards than say Europe for example.  If you ever need to get sized again, make sure you ask which standard they're using... and make sure that you have them size you.  If you order online they often have a printout ring sizer that matches their scale.  I agree though that no, the ring will not stretch.  Just take it in to a jeweler and they can put it on a ring mandrel and stretch it a little.  Make sure he is there and his hands are warm when he tries it on.  His fingers will probably change in size a bit depending on how cold he is, but it's best to do it when it hands are warm so that you don't get the ring too small.
