Re: Cape May

• I am looking at the Ocean Club Hotel on Beach Ave. Samantha was great when I told her that my budget had decreased in size. She was very accomodating. I know that the Ocean Club is associated with the Alcott as well. They are sister hotels. We are doing a cocktail style reception for 95/pp. We are looking into May 2013
• Hello Ladies,

I'm planning a small wedding (30-50)  this August in Cape May.  Any recommendations for restaurants, flowers, music, etc.?  church wedding vs. marrying on the beach?  finding accommodations for guest and house rentals?  The pros and cons. Any advise would be appreciated.

• Hi Everyone,  I am getting married in September 2012 in cape may at the Sunset Pavilion (2nd street) and we are having our recep at Union Park. I am currently still looking for the following: Bakery for 1 tier cake and cupcakes, hair salon, nail salon, officiant, and photographer/videographer.  if anyone can provide any assistance it would be awesome. Also I was wondering for anyone that did a ceremony on the beach or at any of the pavilions did you do any kind of decorations and did you do anything for music at the ceremony. Any other tips/suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well.  Thanks, Kat
• Hi ladies,
I have been looking all over Cape May for my Sept. 2013 wedding.  We will have a hundred people invited. So the smaller venues the Peter Shields and Union Park won't work for us. We really liked the Grand Hotel Cape May but they need a good amount of money guarnteed this far out in advance. I was hoping a fellow capemayer could tell us about their expiernce there and help me choose. We also looked at the Alcott, Southern Mansion, PSI, Martini Beach, and Congress Hall. Any information would be greatly appriecated. Also we wish to get married at the Star of the Sea if at all possible it looks just like our church at home in Lansdowne (we're from right outside of Philly). We did love the Greate Bay country club as well but I'm sad to move my location out of Cape May. Thank you Ladies so glad I found this blog today that i'm not alone :)
• Hello everyone, I am getting married at Congress Hall this month.  I am not sure if the 21% service charge counts as tips for waitstaff or if I need to give something on top of that.  Also, did you tip Daniella?  Thanks!!
• Hi all! I am hoping to plan a wedding for sometime between mid June and mid August 2013... not a teacher but I have two siblings in college that I'd like to accommodate if possible. I am going to Cape May to look at venues this weekend, so can you let me know if there are any places other than the ones I listed below that can fit 100-125 people and a band and dance floor.  I don't live in NJ so I'd like to get this all done in one trip if possible.

Congress Hall
Grand Hotel
Ocean Club
Alcott Hotel
Southern Mansion
La Chalfonte
Wilbraham Mansion

Thanks for the input!

• Hey MLHiester!
I think they are your best ideas. I am from Cape May but my FI is not. We flew up last weekend and checked out Hotel Alcott, The Grand, The Beach Club, and Alethea's. Congress Hall is beautiful. We actually chose Hotel Alcott for July 19th, 2013 and we will have about 100 people.

You can get it all done in one trip but it will be a very busy trip! We only had 48 hours and were exhausted by the time we were coming home to SC.

Goodluck!!

• oh my gosh, i just logged back in and saw this. We booked the hotel alcott for July 20, 2013 a few days ago. What a small world!
Hi everyone, possible Cape May bride here as well! I have to make a decision between Cape May and Jim Thorpe (I live outside of Philadelphia), as both places mean a lot to my fiancee and I. Anyways, I'm wondering if any of you had checked out the Grand as a possible reception place. What did you like/not like about it? I haven't talked pricing yet with Amelia (the coordinator at the Grand), but I'm wondering if it's in the same price range as Congress Hall? If so, I'm worried it may be too expensive. I think Congress Hall is gorgeous, but unfortunately out of our budget :( Another question I had is for all of you doing a ceremony on the beach- are you planning on walking barefoot, or using flip-flops, sandals, etc? I'm just a little worried about having issues walking or my dress dragging in the sand...
Posted by jess2788
I don't know if anyone responded to you it's been awhile the grand hotel upstairs is AMAZING! but if your unsure about having sand on your dress I think Jim Thorpe may be the place for you. I have family in Hazelton so I love it there! let me know your progress and good luck

$135  pp
• We just signed a contract this week for a July 2013 wedding and the price we were quoted was $120 per person for Saturdays and $95 per person for Fridays and Sundays during peak season, which I think was June through early October. April and May was similar but a ilttle cheaper I think.  There was a 120 per person minimum on Sat. and 100 person minimum for Fri and Sun. The hotel emailed me pricing before we visited that was higher than this so maybe they are lowering their prices? Or maybe it costs more like $135 if you don't meet the minimums. This was how it was listed in the folder of info they gave us though so it's not like we got a deal or anything. This also includes chairs, linens, non alcoholic mixers, and all the glasses, plates, etc. so I thought it was a really good deal especially compared with Congress Hall. And it's so pretty! Just wanted to let you all know!

• MLHiester,
That is crazy that our weddings will be the same weekend! I guess we will probably be seeing each other around that weekend! Goodluck! We are visiting my family this July so my FI's mom can see Cape May also. We are probably going to do our tasting then also!

For the others about pricing at the Alcott - We are running about 110$/per on Friday night - we are also having a raw bar so it is a little higher then normal Friday's. Hotel Alcott also includes the cake in pricing.

Are you looking for a beach wedding now instead of Star of the Sea? I grew up in CM and that was actually my church, I know they can be pretty touch to work into sometimes.

For a beach area, the Cove is always great with the Pavillion they have down there. You can see the light house from there also.  Really tho, you can get married any where on the beach you want as long as you have a permit. The beach is usually less crowded as you head towards the Povery end of Beach Dr (towards the coast guard base). In Sept. it shouldn't be too bad!

I would recommend Kate's Flower shop for flower's also. Local and she is wonderful!

• Wow, it's great that there are so many other Cape May brides! Congress Hall was always my dream location (though we did look into other properties in the area), and I'm still floored that this is actually happening to me . We have to accomodate 180, so simply finding enough space was a challenge down there! We're booked for June 2, 2013.

Has anyone heard anything about Coventry Crossing Florist? They seem to specialize in organic flowers - a big draw for me - but has anyone else worked with them before? Any other vendor recommendations?

I didn't look into coverntry Corssing, but I am using Kates Flower shop, I haven't had the wedding yet though, in 2 months! but she was fast on giving a quote and extremely nice.  It's very close to the CVS in West Cape May.I'd say check her out, I am not sure about the organic flowers, if she has that option or not though.

• I have never heard of Coventry Crossing and I grew up in Cape May. But like maccor16 said and I said before, I love Kate's Flower Shop. She is local, has been there since I can remember and she is wonderful! Definitely check her out too :-)

Congress hall is amazing. We are only having 100 people so we didn't need anything as big, but Congress Hall definitely gives you all the Cape May you could want!
• Has anyone looked at pricing on any photographers yet? We are trying to get all that nailed down now!

If anyone has any ideas, that would be great!

I need help finding a ceremony location! Has anyone gotten married/know anyone that got married/or been inside the Cape May First Presbyterian Church? It looks ok from the pictures on the website but I'm not sure. I looked at Our Lady Star too and that's looking like it's not going to be an option as we are not active practicing members.

I thought I wanted an outdoor ceremony but now everyone is saying it will be too hot, etc. (July) and the rain plan inside our reception hall (Alcott) isn't great. I'm also afraid if we have the ceremony on the beach people won't be able to hear and there will be a lot of onlookers.

Please tell me what you are doing for your ceremonies! I'm open to any options you think will accomodate about 120 people. Thank you!!

• Hey!
Cape May First Pres Church is nice, it's not on the Star of the Sea level, but it will be a great place to get married.

I know we are doing outdoor, down on the beach. July is hotter, but we are having a ceremony around 6...it usually cools down a little by that time so it shouldn't be as hot as the early afternoon. The rain part is a little iffy, but I guess we are just praying it doesn't rain :-). And of course on the beach, everyone around does here and there are always tons of on lookers. I grew up being one of the kids that watched those weddings, in my opinion, it adds to the fun!

Goodluck finding somewhere.

Definitely research Coventry Crossing before signing anything.  I was speaking to them and all the owner ever asked for was the deposit--before she even submitted an estimate for me.  I later found a facebook site all about how she ruined a girls wedding....as well as other bad reviews.
I ended up going with A Garden Party in Elmer--they are fantastic!!  They submitted a proposal based on pictures I sent before ever asking for the deposit and are very flexible.  I have heard nothing but great things.  I am still 67 days away from the wedding, but will update you after.
• Has anyone used Mid Atlantic Center Trolley in Cape May?  thier prices are reasonable but in their policy it states there is no alcohol permitted.  This is not a deal breaker but I was curious how strict they might be if we just had a bottle of champagne or something.  I am hoping to book transportation for my wedding party from the church to the reception and thought a trolley would be cute.

Thanks!
• We were thinking about a trolley also! I love the idea. I asked my mom about the alcohol policy also since we were wanting champagne too! She said it probably was no drinks on the trolley. Which is kind of disappointing! If you find any way around it, let me know!!

Thanks!

• I looked into this and the Great American Trolley Co as well as a few others including a place in Philly (where I'm from) that will also go to Cape May. In addition to the no alcohol policy, the midatlantic trolleys don't have air conditioning... my wedding is in july and after the month we've just had that makes me pretty nervous. Great American Trolley Co. is more expensive but they have air conditioning and you can have drinks and I think play music etc. too so if you're travelling a decent distance it could be worth it. someone who used them told me though that they left a bunch of guests behind at the reception venue when the time they had contracted for had expired and they had to call them and get the trolley to come back.. it was a big mess... so if you go with them definitely talk about overtime rates etc. so this won't happen!
