Opinions about Davids Bridal

I am wondering what people think about Davids Bridal gowns. I know that people have complained about the service, but what about the quality of the dresses? Also, has anyone purchased a dress from the Davids Bridal online? I tried on a dress in the shop and it fit perfect. The dress is offered for $100 less online, I just am hesitant to order a dress online. Any suggestions or comments are welcome!

Re: Opinions about Davids Bridal

  • David's Bridal is so thoroughly not to my taste, I just about find them offensive. The dresses are very trendy, and the gross predominance of sleeveless styles...again, not to my taste to the point of being aesthetically offensive.

I ordered a dress from ebay, and the quality was excellent. It was used and had some spots, so I sent it back, but I'm still looking on ebay. I order most of my normal clothes online and rarely have problems.
  • I love the David's Bridal in Springfield Illinois. They helped me find a timeless gown that was affordable. They also helped me make it my own. I think the store gets a bad reputation. I understand people wanting a one of a kind dress but you can find some beautiful gowns there that are affordable. Ive known three different brides who have gotten their dresses from Davids Bridal in the last two years and none of them have complained about their dress. They all looked beautiful.
Now that being said...I do think that you have to be careful with what kind of dress you do buy there. Some of them can be a bit tacky. You can run into that problem anywheter though.

Horrible service. this alone trumps any good quality dress for me. Of you cannot help me, you will not get my money. end of story.
  • I've actually had mixed experiances with Davids. I went with a friend in high school to get a prom dress and it was great, a bridesmaids dress for a wedding, which was not good, and to try on BM dresses with  my FSIL for our wedding, which went really well. I think it totally depends on the store. I was really happy with the quality of BM dresses for the wedding I was in and am getting my BM dresses there because they have the right variety. I didn't like most of the styles they had for actual wedding gowns, so didn't look there for my dress, but it seems like a good idea if you like that style (and it's good for budgets).

I love DB. The service at my local store was great. I didn't order my weddng dress online, but I ordered a bridesmaids dress for my friend's wedidng and it worked out great. I think that I am a little biased though because there is absolutely nothing else in area that caters to plus size ladies.

ETA: I wanted to add that the quality of my dress is great.

  • We did our bms and flower girls through them. They were very busy. My consultant was dealing with 6 groups. He was still attentive and nice though. They have good pricing as well. I did my dress at a smaller salon so that I wouldn't have to deal with such a crowded place. I suggest looking online For reviews for the db that you plan to visit

  • I bought my dress from DB.  The bridesmaid dresses are coming from there as well.  Service can be hit or miss.  I ordered a dress online last spring to wear to a wedding and it was the same quality as the one sold in the store.  They might not be high quality dresses, but they are not low quality is most instances.

  • I went to David's Bridal twice while I was looking. No problems with the service at all, though the second time we went was probably more enjoyable because we had a dressing room away from everyone-- completely changed the experience. Look online. If there are dresses that appeal to you, go to the store. Try them on. The prices certainly can't be beat. I'm paying for most of the wedding (and dress) myself and didnt want to blow out my budget on a dress. When it came down to it, I was torn between a David's Bridal dress and another. The quality was quite lovely for the David's Bridal dress (granted, it was one of their more expensive dresses -- but still under 1000) though I unltimately went with the other dress since it fit my vision a little more (I was looking for a little less formal, and the David's Bridal dress I loved was that Oleg Casini halter back one in satin with beading). Anyway-- check it out for yourself.
  • The David's Bridal I went to was excellent (I'm in South Florida).
To be honest, you can go one day and just pick up the book and see if they have styles that you would even like to try on.
For me, it was the store (and I went to all price ranges type of store) where I tried on the most dresses because honestly they were beautiful. First dress I tried on EVER was from there (Vera Wang line) and I would have bought if it wasn't because my mom didn't love it.
I thought the quality was great and comparale to more expensive stores. Service was great as well and sometimes better than more expensive stores.
I'd say give it a shot! You might be surprised!

I agree with this.  I had 2 so horrible experiences there that I wouldn't wear a dress from DB if it was given to me for free.

  • yes for bridesmaids dresses...no for bridal gowns.

i think you should go to a salon for you bridal gown that they will give you an absolute one of a kind experience. its great! and to get you your own custom gown made is great!

the service when we went for bridesmaids dresses was very very poor. we were pulling our own dresses and everything.
  • I would say they are inconsistant.  The one closest to my house has HORRIBLE, annoying service and they never know what's going.

The ladies at the second-closest one are knowledgable, sweet and will go out of their way for you.

I think the quality of dresses is good, my sister got one from the nice David's after we left the annoying David's in irritation.....
  • Agree with some of the PP that they are inconsistent.  I bought my gown and BM dresses there, and I absolutely love them.  DB in Arlington was the only store that I tried on dresses, and I was fortunate to find my perfect dress.  I have never had any regrets about not looking anywhere else.  We also had a really nice surprise when we went to check out, and found it my dress was on sale for less than half of the marked price. (My mom cried twice that day!)  My consultant was great, I felt beautiful, and it was a great experience.

However, I live near Houston, as well as two of my BM, so this is where I have had alterations and where those two ordered their dresses.  The service at this location has been less than impressive.  Nothing that was a deal-breaker, but kind of annoying that, for both of my fittings, I called the day-of and they had no record of my appointments.  They didn't call one of my BM to tell her that her dress was in, but instead called me several weeks after to say that, if she didn't come pick it up, they were going to send it back.

So, I guess it's hit-or-miss.  All of the dresses I tried on were beautiful and all of my BM's love their dress (the four of them are all wearing the same style).  If you have found a dress that you like and know for sure that it looks good on you, I say go for it with ordering online.
  • I did not buy a DB dress but I tried on a few.  The lady was hopping back and forth between me and another client.  That client had her family, I did not.  I felt like she got more service thatn I did.  The sister of that client was even zipping up my dress for me!

However, if it's going to same me a few hundred bucks in the end, I can certainly put up with non-top notch service.  It doesn't bother me.  They weren't rude, they were just not fawning all over me, which is fine.

The dresses were very inconsistent in sizing.  Some 6's were huge, otheres I couldn't zip up.  If you tried on quality made gowns you can tell a difference with the support, etc.

However, if you want a very easy to move in dress that isn't too heavy, they had a lot of those.  Keep in mind I only tried on dresses under $400.
  • I've been to DB twice, both times looking for dresses during 99$ gown sales. The first time I went the service was great, but the second time it was pretty bad. I wouldn't say that it was so bad it makes shopping there not worth it, though. Like ginadog said, they weren't rude, just not fawning all over me, either. I had my mom there and the fact that I didn't have an attendant with me every minute we were there gave us a chance to talk about the dress (I'm not a girly-girl and my mom had all sorts of insights into dress-wearing), move around in it, etc. And I should probably add that the sales people were helpful, they brought me what I needed, helped me put stuff on/take stuff off, answered my questions, and so on. So if you're thinking about going to DB, don't think that you're going to get neglected or verbally abused or anything.

As far as the dresses themselves go, I think you could find THE dress there. I had my heart set on a certain style and fabric and ended up going a different route, and I'm glad I did, it looked better on me than on the hanger, and it was much more 'me' than the other dresses. DB carries a lot of different styles, and yes, some of them are ugly, but a lot of them are just gorgeous. There wasn't a lot of selection in my size (I'm a 2). I ended up liking one of the $99 size 4 dresses, and I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did once I put it on. I had it altered, and even with the alteration costs, I could not have found anything for that amount that I would have liked nearly as much. My mom kept trying to get me to take the dress off so we could look at shoes, but I didn't want to get out of it :)

TL;DR: don't let stories of bad customer service scare you off, DB is worth a look, especially when they have sales.
  • DB = good for BM dresses or party dresses.

Not so much for wedding gowns.

But I'm a really big "shop local/support local business" type person, so I'm slightly biased against giant chains anyway.
  • I have gotten my dress there and it's gorgeous. The material is great and I love it. Be careful ordering them online though, even in store the size sometimes isn't always the same. I got mine in store and it was the wrong size, one they ordered it wrong, and two what I wore in a well worn sample dress didn't fit. The sample had been just a bit to big. They fixed it very quickly. Their service is hit or miss, but I think by now most people know that going into it. Some of the salespeople there seem to be surprised to find they work in a bridal store and others you wonder why they aren't in a better bridal store (cause their that good).
The quality of the dresses don't change just cause you order online, it will be the same dress as in the store, just because of size. I have one BM who got her dress in store and other got her's online, I couldn't tell you the difference. Hope that helps.

There was just another thread like this recently, so this might help, too:

Long story short...I'd rather support small business, get better service, and a better quality gown at a local boutique.  But that's just me.

  • It realy all depends where you go to Davids and how the ladies working there are!!

I got my dress at Davids and had nothing but a wonderful experience I had the sweetest woman working with me!  I went in kowing what I wanted and went with the first one I fell in love with and tried on.  I ended up getting one of their more expensive dresses and as she brought over more in similar styles that were less expensive (I dind't know going in of the price point I found it in a magazine and loved it) you could really tell the quality of the material and the structure of the dress just wasn't there.

Some people say this store is a bridal factory but I really have to disagree.  I went up there 2 times before making a decision because I wanted to narrow it down before I picked out my final choice and I also wanted the woman in my family to be able to see it.  The lady I worked with from day 1 was nothing but nice and curtious she put different jewelry and stuff on me and didn't try to upsell because she was like reall you don't have to get this from here if you have somethign you want to use or whatever I just want you to be able to get the whole idea and look of it.

I am also getting my BM dresses there and the whole experience has just been great.

I really get bummed out when people bash DB so sorry this is kinda long but like I said in the beginning it al depends where you go and how the ladies are!

There is a little boutique around whjere I grew up and they have always been snotty to me so for me there is no way I would go there and spend a dime so I can understand people not likeing a place because of the service.

They do have some really beautiful and reasonable gowns!

I think this is realllly offensive.  I could have gone to a boutique but the one closest to me is super rude and snotty because I am not a size 0 and have curves.  I am a size 8 and I thinkg I look Beautiful!!

Also, I do feel that I got a one of a kind experience, I don't want to be pushed into an expensive dress that I don't want!  What made it so nice was the lady actaully gave my family and I time to look at the dress and also time to talk!! She came back frequently to check on us but wasn't up our butts the whole time!!

I did get my own custom made gown, its taken about 5 months to make so far and isn't in yet.

They also have great payment plans there which make it doable if you can't come up with the cash upfront!!

  • I would go and try on a David's Bridal gown and then go to a wedding boutique and try on other designers to compare. There is NOOOO comparison!!!! I first went and tried dresses on David's Bridal and if I never went anywhere else I could have settled on an "average' dress there. I then went to a bridal salon and OMG there was no comparison. Other moderately priced deisngers like Maggie Sottero and Allure fit me like a glove, the materials were high quality and felt so much richer!! You might pay a little more, but you will be soooo happy and see the difference by not buying at Davids Bridal. It's like the Wal-Mart of Bridal dresses I feel like. The service isn't great, the stores don't make you feel that special. You only get to try dresses on once, so make it memorable! I chose a Maggie Sottero dress and am in love with it!!! best of luck in your search!

  • I went to my local David's Bridal for my first dress-shopping trip because they have gowns in all silhouettes and fabrics and styles in all sizes right there, so I figured it would be a good starting point because I had no idea what I wanted. Then I figured I'd spend more time at a smaller shop once I had a better notion of what to focus on.

I fell in love with a Galina Signature dress at DB and bought it online that same night - it was $50 less on their website than in the store but they wouldn't match the price! Weirdos. Anyway, the dress arrived in a week and it's so perfect, great quality (it was one of those $1000+ ones to begin with, I got a good sale) and I am thrilled with the gown and the online buying process. The dress came in the mail along with all the same coupons you get if you buy in store (free Shutterfly album!), it was packaged well, and included info on getting it steamed and pressed for free at my DB store.

There is a definite difference in the quality of their dresses across the board. You CAN feel it when you try them on - the Vera Wang and Galina Signature lines felt much nicer than the others, in my opinion. Range of prices, range of quality. But what I got in the mail is exactly what I tried on.

If you want gushing, fawning service at a bridal salon, DB is probably not for you. I LIKED that my consultant was't staring me down the whole time. I liked that my sister and friend could go pull dresses for me themselves. I was dreading dress shopping because strangers stare at you and judge you and think they know best. All I want from my consultant is answers to my questions.

So all in all, DB worked fine for me and I'm glad to have that done. On to centerpieces!

</div><div>I find all of this to be absolutely true.  My consultant didn't lavish me with attention, but the store manager was even more present than she in a really good way.  She didn't offer her opinion until I asked for it, and her responses were very thoughtful, not at all a pushy sales pitch.  They were really willing to work with me.  I really didn't need the top notch service though.  I went with some of my bm's and my mom and they were what I needed.</div><div>
</div><div>They also let me try on about a dozen dresses even though pretty much everyone knew the first dress I tried on was *it.*  And when I chose it and I didn't want to take it off, they let me sit around  and swan around in it as much as I liked.  To me, that was really good service, making a bride feel good about herself.  It doesn't always take plush chairs and champagne to do that.  I will also say they found me every discount they could.</div><div>
</div><div>It is true that quality varies by line.  I tried on their Kate Middleton look alike dress and that one looks really good but the satin isn't half as nice as the Oleg Cassini one I wound up buying.  Honestly, I went to a boutique and I didn't find anything I liked nearly half as much as the dresses at David's Bridal.  At the boutique I found one which was pretty good, but at David's Bridal I had three contenders.  And lest you think I'm a model who can work it, I wear a size 14, and their gowns were super flattering.</div><div>
</div><div>I didn't think I wanted a big wedding factory store, but in the end I'm really glad I went because it saved me some cash and I got a dress I absolutely adore, which I feel is very well made.

    </div>
  • Although it is a chain, I still believe you can get a one-of-a-kind experience. I feel that it is unfair to blame an entire company for a bridal consulants imperfections, and as a bride preparing for one of the biggest days of our lifes I feel its fair to request a new consulant if we feel the one assigned to us is not meeting our standards.
