Father Daughter Dance Songs that wont make me sob?

Let me start by saying I am a pretty emotional person, I tear up at the thought of "here comes the bride" and I have sat here looking at potential father daughter dance songs and cried, really cried the entire time.  I wish I were one of those people that would have that single tear running down their face but I'm not, I cant help it but listening to most of these songs makes me sob.  I want a happy song to dance to, not one that seems like a 3.5 minute goodbye.  I already live with my fiance, I havent lived with my dad for 9 years, so I dont want a "goodbye" song since nothing is changing with us.  Any suggestions??  Right now all I can think of is "what a wonderful world" by louis armstrong.

Thanks in advance!

What about "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder? It was wrote about his daughter newborn daughter but I think it works for a father/daughter dance as well.  And they play it for the winner of Miss America.  Its sweet and should make you feel gorgeous and beautiful and like you've got a father whose super proud - all things you should feel on your wedding day!  I know how you feel though, my dad is my bff and i dont know which one of is going to cry more - I'm betting on him though!
  • I did My girl too.  It's a nice upbeat happy song :)
  • "The Sunny Side of the Street" or "In my Life"?
  • Good question!  I hate all those silly sappy songs.  We're thinking about either In My Life by the Beatles or Unforgetable by Nat King Cole.
  • I'm also very emotional and I know my dad will be worse than me!  We decided on "My Girl" too.
  • I would tear up with My Girl...don't know why.

We ended up doing "Just the Way You Are" by Billy Joel. I consider myself very emotional too and I was surprised that I didn't cry. It could have been because my dad did a 10 minute speech when I told him that he had 2 minutes.

  • You've got a friend by James Taylor might be a good one.  "you just call out my name, and you know wherever I am, I'll come running..."  Seems like it'd fit the bill.  I also agree with "my girl".  Good luck, let us know what you decide!
  • My girl and you got a friend sound awesome actually.... may take that into consideration as its been years since ive relied on my dad for anything glad I read this post

  • My Dad and I are dancing to "Its Your World Now" by The Eagles. I'm not to terribly sentimental but he turns out to be as we started listening to song. This is one he picked out for not crying during.

  • My dad picked the song. He wanted Stealing Cinderella by Chuck Wicks. I will definately be crying.

  • Some of my friends choose You Are My Sunshine because that's what their dads sang to them when they were kids.

  • Look for a song that reminds you both of a special event that you share, maybe a song from when you were a little girl, or that reminds you of a family trip-anything that makes it personal but fun.
  • WOW-I didn't know "My Girl" was such a popular song!  I danced to that with my dad when he got remarried when I was 12, so it's a natural choice.  But I WILL be crying!
  • I know EXACTLY how you feel. I don't want a sob song either. I cry at EVERYTHING. Even Hallmark cards. So with that said, the song I picked for my Father/Daughter dance is 'A Wink and a Smile' by Harry Connick Jr.

I'm really close with my Dad, and it will be a miracle if I get through the whole day without crying. While I'm writing this I'm tearing up, LOL.

    Good luck! Laughing
  • I am choosing I Loved Her First.....Im pretty sure Ill be sobbing :(
  • how about the song Butterfly Kisses?
  • I'm doing 'Twist and Shout' by the Beatles because I sang and danced to that with my dad when I was really little.  My cousin and her father danced to a Rolling Stones song because it had special meaning to them.  Is there a fun, upbeat song that is sentimental for the two of you?  That way it will still have a special meaning, but you'll have so much fun that you won't be crying!
  • I think we're going to be dancing to 'Joy of My Life' by John Fogerty. We're both huge fans of his and it's something that will always be 'our thing'. Pick something that means something to you and your dad, it doesn't matter what the song is - it can really be any song you want, as long as it means something special to the both of you! :)
  • We are dancing to Gracie by Ben Folds. It was written for his little girl. Such a cute song too! And we're gonna change the words so that they say baby girl instead of Gracie girl since my dad always has (and I'm sure always will) call me baby girl. :)
  • I am also a big cryer, but not a really emotional person otherwise, so I really wanted a non-sappy song - I gave this job to my dad, and specified no "Butterfly Kisses" type songs, because that's not the type of relationship my dad and I have and we don't need the room sobbing!!!
My dad loves Phil Collins so it was a toss up between You'll be my heart and True colours.  We decided that the meaning of "you'll be my heart was more typical for a fathe rdaughter, dance and we are doing a foxtrot, so I will be focused more on my moves than on crying!!!
  • very good song, my best friend's brother sang Butterfly Kisses for her father daughter dance.... not a dry eye in the house.
  • My dad picked Cinderella by Steven Curtis Chapman.  It is really sweet, but not too sappy.

  • Someone else mentioned it but I was thinking of "In my life" because it's a beautiful song and the Beatles have always been my Dad's favorite band.  I'm also a huge sap and since I haven't lived with my parents in years or been close with my Dad pretty much ever, it seems like a sweet but not overly emotional choice.
  • I'm not trying to be a downer, but as I lost my Dad last summer, I suggest you pick a song that captures your relationship!  Sobs will be happening no matter what, so just pick a song that summerizes how you feel about him and no matter what, you'll have great memories of that dance with your Dad for years to come!  Good luck!
  • I love "Father and daughter" by Paul Simon.
It's upbeat but still sweet and sentimental.

  • I really enjoyed everyones feedback. I'm getting married in 20 days and hadnt even thought of a song. My Girl sounds fitting.
  • I was going to suggest Gracie by Ben Folds as well. My dad and I are dancing to "Part of my World" from The Little Mermaid. It was my favorite movie when I was growing up and my dad suggested the song as he used to sing it to me when putting me to bed at night.
  • my baby you by marc anthony he wrote it for his daughter, so pretty!!
  • My little girl by tim mcgraw, it makes me sob everytime, even when I'm at the gym lol.  We will be doing My Girl, but breaking into a special father/daughter dance halfway through to a secret song.  My dad doesn't know yet, but I'm pretty sure he'll play along!
