Pet Loves, come on in!

Re: Pet Loves, come on in!

  • Ha, oh wow that was definitely a brain fart...

She's 15 pounds full grown as opposed to a beagle that gets between 30-40 pounds. I also think that because she is smaller she's also dumber. She is the worst beagle ever, she can't even track her own treats when we hid them in the apartment.

  • FI and I got Cooper in November 2009 and he was just 8 weeks old. I had just moved to the city a few months prior so I was kind of lonely and talked about getting a dog all the time so FI got him for me as an early Christmas present. He has been the best gift ever!

Cooper is like my little baby and we are throwing him a dog birthday party in September when he turns one. He has lots of doggie friends so it should be...interesting. When I nail down a job and FI goes back to working full time (he took time off to study for and take the bar exam) we plan on getting Cooper a sister. We want a smaller dog but will probably rescue from a shelter this time. We got Cooper from a breeder.

Lexus is about 14lbs....she could stand to lose 1-2lbs but gained weight during her one pregnancy and hasn't been able to get it off. Jersey is about 10.5lbs and Kaylee is about 6.5lbs. She's very tiny yet rules the household. We're thinking of adding a great dane to the mix when we buy our new house.

Kaylee yowls and acts like we're beating her. Then she won't even come cuddle with us for a good hour cause she's punishing us. Jersey and Lexus tolerate us giving them baths but they don't love em.

Say whaaaaaat? My mom has always been allergic to cats, but Simba (my black cat) has always been the worst for her. Weird!

  • That's what I've heard, but it might be an old wives' tale. H loves black cats, so I think that's the route to convincing him we need another.

Thx! I just wish I knew how to do the simple stuff in life. :)
  • My mom actually got Whisky. My cat Sheera had run away and I was upset. I went ice skating with a friend and when I got home, she said she got me a cat and was hiding under the bed (I was in 8th grade).

She saw an ad in thepaper for a free cat and went to check him out. The owner's husband was abusive to him and beat Whisky, and his dogs terrorized him. Another lady had taken Whisky, but brought him back because she couldn't get him out from under the bed and didn't want a "problem cat." Well. My mom couldn't just leave him, and she knew that taking care of an injured animal was what I needed, so she got him.

It took a long time to convince Whisky that we weren't going to hurt him, but finally he stopped shaking whenever someone looked at him. I left him at home when I went to college, then when DH and I moved in together I brought him up. He now spoils Whisky more than I do.

    Here's my furry guy:

I noticed in your bio that you said your dog is a teacup beagle breed. Teacup beagles are not a breed. Your dog is a mutt...a mix between a beagle and some small terrier. Whoever paid a lot of money for her was stupid. There are thousands of beagles in shelters that need homes. Please, if anyone is looking to adopt a beagle, get one from a shelter or rescue group.

    http://www.brewbeagles.org

While it was nice of you to take your Army friend's beagle after s/he got deployed, there are volunteer groups that will take your dog and care for it until you return from being deployed.

    http://www.guardianangelsforsoldierspet.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=62&Itemid=165

I volunteer for a beagle rescue group, and I work for the military so these two issues are near and dear to my heart.

To all the people in this thread who adopted a pet from shelter, THANK YOU FOR SAVING AN ANIMAL'S LIFE.

We got Gidget about 3 years ago. I always considered myself a dog person until I saw this kitten. I had to have her and my FI thought I was nuts.

There were 3 kittens that were found in a backyard in PA. A friend of ours recently lost hers and we went with her to claim one of the kittens (I wanted to play with the kittens them while she decided). We were in separate apartments at the time and mine wouldn't allow pets. So FI called his landlord to be sure and he was OK with it so we took her home- fo FI's apartment :). Needless to say I was there constantly to play with the new kitten until we moved in together a short time later.

She was only a .5 lb's when we got her and now almost 12! We are almost positive she is part Maine Coon.

  • No great big news here, but here's my angel Maggie, enjoying the sun when we first moved to Iowa (this is one of my favorite pictures of her, except you can't see her beautiful marble eyes - she's Catahoula). We lost her December 27, 2009:

And this, is Max, aka, Maxilla Godzilla. He weighs twice as much as Maggie, stands twice as tall as she did - and is 25% dachshund. Go figure.

We got Meka shortly after I moved into my first apartment after university, May '07. We weren't living together yet, but I think I was only on my own with her for a month or two.

Chloe came home with us this past Christmas after someone left her outside of Derek's Grandma's boyfriends house. She was posing for me last night while I tried out a new app.

You are incorrect again about something...full grown HEALTHY weight beagles are not all 30-40 pounds. No beagle should weigh 40 pounds. My full grown beagle is 21 pounds. The average weight of full grown healthy beagles is 18-35 pounds.

  • We have two dogs. Rudy is a golden that my family got from a farm (literally, farm dogs) when I was on a break from college. It was a poor choice and I will never support that type of breeder again but that is the past. He is an amazing dog and moved with me to TX for the rest of college.

Kasper I adopted from a private foster home. He was a street dog in coastal TX and very food reactive, couldnt brush him, etc. It was sad and even though he was in a foster home, he had so many fleas, ticks, and was severely underweight (he had sores on his butt from the bones rubbing the floor when he sat down). He is now the most spoiled little boy ever. They are my joys in life.

I came into the relationship with both of them and Mister embraces them as his own. It's wonderful.

oh and my BIL and landlord bought a cow. He lives with us now for a couple of years until...well, he becomes what cows are used for. I baby him in the meantime. Mister mostly just helps with the heavy lifting but doesnt like to play with him. hahaha

[QUOTE]we did a no-no and got our puppy together when we'd been dating a year and were not engaged yet. we wanted an English golden retriever and found a breeder close by that had a litter coming up, so we put our name down. we wanted a girl, but all the girls were taken already, but we had first choice of boys. our boy Murphy was hyper and came up to us readily, so we picked him. he's great and the sweetest dog you'd ever meet, yet timid. he's scared of cars and thunderstorms and never barks unless we say "speak." (which is both a good thing and a bad thing) the day we got him in 2007: the day we got engaged, in April 2008. last fall: all the most recent pictures of him are still on my phone. when I get a job, we want to get him a roommate. I think either a schnauzer mix or a westie. definitely a girl this time. I want to call her Molly.

i had a mini schnauzer named molly! best dog ever, imho. i miss her :(

the fiance and i adopted our little rugrat, whom we've mistakenly named lady, in march, after being engaged about 3 months. she was found by my future mother-in-law's coworker, wondering around a mall parking lot, probably looking for a parking spot. she's supposedly a newfoundland/lab mix, but right now she's 6 months and under 40lbs, so i'm wondering if she's an extreme runt or if she's not at all what she's cracked up to be.

  • FI and I both have cats. Mine will likely be staying with my parents. Here's my Splinter kitty:

FSIL found FI's cat on the side of the highway on 7/7/07, so of course, they named her lucky. She's the most curious animal I've ever encountered, she always has to be looking out of the window, trying to open doors, getting into cupboards. She drives me nuts, but I miss her.

DH had Cleo with his ex, I didnt meet him until she was about 5 years old. She is now about 11 now. Quite old for a Doberman.
Tobie my son found about 4 years ago. He was whining in the bushes around the corner from our house in the pouring rain. So he brought him home and dried him off, as I was looking for a home for him. Well we found one alright!
I had 2 other cats/and a dog that have passed since DH and I have been together, and he had one cat that passed. So these are the only 2 left.

  • I second the opinion about Schnauzers. They are fantastic dogs.

I got Mr. Taffers almost 14 years ago (holy crap, he's getting old) for Christmas when I was 12. So yeah, I've had him more than half of my life. He warmed up to DH fairly well when we started dating, although Taffers was living with my mom while I was in school. I graduated in 2007 and DH moved in with me in 2008, and they get along okay. Most parrots bond to one person, and he is bonded to me, so he tolerates DH.

This was my Schnauzer mix, Kibbles that passed away in 2007 at the ripe old age of 16. I was 6 when I got him.

This is my parents 3 legged Jack Russell Terrier Molly. We got her when I was in 3rd grade, and now she is going to be 15 in October. She had her leg amputated a few years ago because she had cancer in her paw, but I don't think she even notices it's missing...

And this is my mini-rex rabbit Mocha. We thought Mocha was a she when FI and I bought her, but a few months later I found his ballsack. Now she is a he.

  • DH and I adopted our kitties last fall after we bought a house. We couldn't wait to adopt kittens! We were probably equally as excited about being new home owners as we were about being kitty parents. :)

Tallica (DH's name pick after Metallica) and Malu (my name pick after Troy Polamalu) are brothers, and we adopted them from the local no-kill shelter.

  • I normally don't post, but I can't pass up a chance to show off my fur(and non-fur) babies!

When FI and I first started dating, we each had a cat. I had Fuzzball, who I got when I was four, and was nursing through Diabetes and Asthma, eye ulcers, and heaven knows what else. FI had Pete, a 2 year old orange tabby. Fuzzy was the tuxedo. The pale orange tabby is Boris, who we picked up as a stray in FI's mother's yard about 9 months after we started dating. After two hours of picking fleas off of him and a few hundred dollars getting him wormed, vaccinated, and fixed, he was ours! This picture was a VERY rare occurence and the last picture I have of Fuzzy, who I finally had to have put down after seventeen wonderful years with him.

Pete was hit by a car while staying with FI's mom when we were out of the country. So, we were down to just Boris. I didn't want Boris to get lonely during the day so I dragged FI to an adoption event at Petsmart. We walked out of there with Wagner (named after Kurt Wagner, Nightcrawler from X-Men.) He and Boris get along famously and he managed to drag Boris into a second kitten-hood only six months after Boris's first had ended!

I'd been bugging FI for almost four years about getting a dog when he finally agreed (reluctantly) to go to the Humane Society and "just look" with me. We ended up fostering Natasha for a month before he finally agreed that she was wonderful and now he likes to take credit for picking her out. Smile She was 2.5 years old when we got her a year ago. She's a wonderful husky/greyhound mix that was left behind when her family moved. Their loss!

The non-furbaby is Leto, and he's our newest addition. He's a Kenyan Sand Boa and just adorable!

Thanks for giving me an excuse to AW our little family!

  • whew....ready??

we adopted Laila (my "boxador") from the shelter is is my BABY, I can't believe she was there - apparently she was adopted twice and returned twice. I seriously think people lied why they returned her, sure she had energy but she is so well trained and my role model for the foster dogs.

The FI moved to Ohio with me - we had no friends, no family, but I was SURE to rent an apartment where we could have a dog. We joked if we broke up we would have papers drawn up for custody sharing of her. :0) NO JOKE

But we were only dating.....we also were only dating when we bought a house but my guy had it set in his mind he wasn't going to let me go....now we are engaged have our furkids, a house....no on to the wedding!

(side note the FI is baby crazy right now....if he mentions having a baby Laila ironically stands/steps in his groin....I think she is trying to say something)

then there is Mandi who is one of my foster dogs - she was very badly abused and not socialized as a pup long story short she was stolen to save her as the guy beat the litter to death (he didn't want pups but didn't want to fix his chain unaltered female shep). We got her when she was 4 months old and no one has adopted her yet since she is shy/skiddish...but we call her Commander Manders who has TONS of personality once she warms up

Dodge is another foster my purebred kentucky mutt - he was an owner surrender and was supposed to be euthed somehow he wasn't but then he was going to be euthed again and we saved him a few hours before being euthed...hence the name Dodge :0)

Lincoln is the newest of our crew - he is a dane mix (yep I foster the big 'uns) he is a ham, thinks he is a lap dog, and loves to give hugs - our group rescued him the day he was going to be put down because no one was interested in adopting him...

And Brady....he is a special foster too. He was bitten by a snake, AND hit by a car. His old "owner" didn't want to vet him and was going to leave him to die - called a friend of mine in KY who could hear him crying in pain and he said if she wasn't going to come and get him he was "gunna take 'em out back a rid 'em." My friend drove 1.5 hours got him - had to make a stretcher out of a car mat since Brady couldn't even stand - a month in the vets office and he was still under weight. He is my lil tripod - he has all four legs but I am working on him getting use of all 4...I am getting there Laughing but he if taken to a shelter in rural KY would NEVER have made it out (he is the ONE foster I sooooooooooo want to keep!)
(yes Brady has one ear up and one ear down - part of his charm)

Yes with the dogs my house can be crazy but I get lots of compliments on how well they behave....I do not claim to be a dog whisperer but I def am pretty good with my pack. My FI even gets into the action....impressive a 5 dog sit:
