  I don't know if you'd want him to wear a tux shirt with a suit. I think that looks "goofy". If he's the only guy in the wedding why don't you just let him wear whatever he would regularly wear with the suit? Just make sure he he's got a nice tie and he'll look like a million bucks.
  
  If he's the only one, it's not like there will be anyone to compare it to.

  Is there a certain tie & vest colour/pattern that you really like that you want him to specifically wear?  You can rent just those pieces from a tux rental place.  If you don't have something specific in mind, I would just let him wear a black or grey suit that he already owns.  Cheap and he will be comfortable.

  A tuxedo jacket and pants are different from a regular suit jacket and pants.  Specifically, tuxedos have satin lapels and a satin stripe down the side of the leg.   A black suit would not look right with a tuxedo shirt, vest, etc.   

  
  

  However, if he's the only guy, he can just wear a dark suit if he owns one.  If not, a decent suit can be purchased for about $100 at JCPenney, and perhaps slightly more at Mens Warehouse or Jos A Banks (though those two stores often have monster sales).  He'll get a lot of future wear out of a back suit if he doesn't already own one.

  Thanks for the feedback. We had no idea what the difference between a regular suit and a tux is!  We want him to have the vest and tie that match the bridesmaids, so that was why we wanted to do something other than a regular suit, but we were hopeing to keep the cost down a bit by not doing the tux.
