Hawaii for $4000 or less?

Is it possible to do a nice Hawaii vacation for under $4000?  Our flights seem to be a little more coming from Syracuse, NY which doesn't help.  I've heard that food can be expensive.  Anyone vacation for a week?  Which islands were you on, and any pointers?  TIA!

Re: Hawaii for $4000 or less?

  • I had friends at our wedding get hotel and car and flights for 1500$ a piece for a week on Maui (they flew from Ottawa, which tends to have comparable prices to New York - if not more expensive). As for food being expensive - rent a condo and you'll save some because you can cook for yourself.
  • We flew to Hawaii from Buffalo, NY - stayed on maui for 1 week and then on the Big Island for 1 week, had a car (Mustang and Jeep)the whole time and spent just under $5000.
If you are only styaing 1 week - you can def. do it for less than $4,000. Here's some tips...
    Rent a condo
Get a cheap car (like a chevy cobalt or something similar)
Shop around for your excursions - yes there are deals out there
Talk to a few TA's about pricing on your trip and research on your own - there are affordable ways to do Hawaii without breaking the bank.
Yes food is expensive, but restaurants are about the same as on the Mainland, budget for that and get groceries at the store and eat in sometimes.
  • We did Maui in July for a week for about $4,000 which included everything (flight, hotel, food, activities, rental car.)  Some pointers:

    1.  As pp mentioned, rent a condo.

    2.  Make a reservation for a cheap car, but Priceline a car a week or so before you go.  We were able to get a convertible for $20/day.

    3.  Go to an island where the "excursions" are free or cheap.  Maui has so much to do that's free or inexpensive, so we only did 3 activities while we were there (surfing lessons, a sunset champagne cruise, luau.)

Not sure if you have a Costco membership, but I've seen AMAZING deals on their website for a week at the Westin that includes car, breakfast and resort credit.)

  • Thanks everyone!  I will definitely check out some of your suggestions!!
  • Ooh, and have you picked up the Maui Revealed book? Here's the link to the website.
  • Ditto the Costco travel deals!  I just got a membership this weekend because the deals are so good.  Looking at 9 days in Oahu and Maui for $3500-ish, staying at Starwood Hotels (Sheraton and Westin).  We'll be leaving from DC.

    Good luck!

  • i thought this was a joke at first...of course you can do hawaii for a week for less than 4000 dollars....My FI and I are going to Maui in June for our honeymoon and total cost will be around 1500 dollars including flights and hotel. Factoring in the cost of car rental and planned activities total cost should be around 2500.

  • Check out www.hawaii-aloha.com I was looking here for deals on all inclusive travel to Hawaii. The Oahu Supsersaver is a great package, includes airfare, hotel, activities (one or more per day) and meals. Priced from Montana is about $3800 so it might be slightly more from NY but I bet not much more. I also priced it seperately and found it to be cheaper. I found the same activities and MUCH more on hawaiiactivities.com
Haven't looked into costco for deals yet but i've also heard thats a great way to go.
Most hotels are near reasonably priced restaurants, and some restaurants have continental bfasts to avoid spending too much $$ on meals.
